Job Development Intern

SCOPE OF POSITION:
For IRC clients to be become fully self-sufficient they must be taught how to obtain gainful employment as well as the fostering of an inclusive workforce community. This intern position is within the Economic Empowerment team and will support the Job Developer with various tasks including partnership development, labor market research, data entry and one-on-one coaching with clients during all phases of pre-employment.   
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:  
  • Conduct labor market research and in-house partnership outreach. 
  • Organize outreach material (branding material and resume editing) to support in-person employer meetings preparation. 
  • Identify relevant job opportunities and employment community events.  
  • Assist in data entry and monitoring of employer and client interactions and opportunities via the JD Tracker (excel) and the “Job Binder”. 
  • Provide one-on-one assistance to clients when needed in job search and interview/career fair prep. 
  • Help and coordinate transportation needs for client job interviews and career fairs.  
  • Understand the details and objectives of the IRC employment program as well as other IRC programs and services. 
 
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 
  • Intern will gain knowledge about strategic partnership development and communication outreach. 
  • Intern will learn about IRC’s services to refugees from many different backgrounds and how best to assist them in their resettlement in the US. 
 
REQUIREMENTS:  
  • Must be comfortable with outreach to employers on the phone and in-person. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and professionalism.  
  • Minimum of 1 year experience working with low income or diverse backgrounds. 
  • Must have a solid knowledge of resume writing criteria as well as employment practices. 
  • Savvy in marketing and promotion material design. 
  • Confident in advising and mentoring clients. 
  • Preferably has experience working with interpreters, but training can be provided. 
  • Proficient using online search tools, Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Powerpoint). 
  • Successful when multi-tasking in a lively/noisy, diverse environment. 
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to client confidentiality. 
  • Valid driver’s license and a vehicle with valid insurance are required. 
 
This position reports to the Job Developer.  
  • This is an unpaid internship.
  • Work related driving is eligible for reimbursement at the IRS Charitable Rate. 
  • Internships are available for current college students starting in their second year, graduate students, and graduates less than 2 years post-graduation. Course credit is available if the student coordinates with their university and confirms the appropriate paperwork with the Volunteer Coordinator.

COMMITMENT:
Hours per week: 15-30 hours per week, during IRC's regular business hours of 9 am-5 pm, M - F
Duration: 4-6 months, or 240 hours
IRC is committed to working with student schedules. As such, we are flexible with accommodating time off for midterms and school holidays, and altering time availability with changing class schedules.
