Radiation Therapist
UnityPoint Health-Methodist Campus
Shift: Full time/40 hrs per week Mon-Fri 8A-4:30P
 
 SUMMARY
 
To provide professional care and treatment to the radiation oncology patient during the delivery of an indicated amount of ionizing radiation as prescribed by the Radiation Oncologist. The incumbent will perform simulation and treatment, will handle all types of radioactive materials necessary for the therapeutic radiology, and will perform other duties as required or assigned.
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
  • CORRECT POSITIONING OF PATIENT AND TREATMENT UNIT TO PRODUCE ANTICIPATED RESULTS. PERFORMS PROPER DOCUMENTATION. ANTICIPATES PATIENT NEEDS. FOLLOWS RADIATION SAFETY STANDARDS.
  • Read, interpret and perform the physician's prescribed treatment plan on a daily basis.
  • Set up room for each patient's treatment
  • Talk to the patient, asking questions about their current physical state, responding to problems or concerns
  • Correctly position patient on the treatment table and deliver prescribed, daily portal dose
  • Perform portal films and/or ultrasound as prescribed by the radiation oncologist
  • Perform PDM function as prescribed by the physician
  • Clear and accurate documentation of all patient charges
  • Access and implement the patient's treatment in the record and verify system
  • Understand the procedures to follow should problems arise implementing the patient's treatment
  • Follows radiation safety standards
  • Follow known departmental safety procedures by wearing safety badge as outlined by safety officer, participate in yearly radiation safety meetings, notify immediately coordinator with any safety concerns and actively participates in patient safety
  • Demonstrates a practical problem solving approach to patient moving and handling issues.
  • Demonstrates skills to promote patient and staff safety through appropiate use of lift equipment.
  • PERFORMS SIMULATIONS IN ORDER TO OUTLINE THE PATIENT'S TREATMENT PORTALS. CONTOURS AND IMOBILIZATION DEVICES ARE MADE CORRECTLY.
  • Set up room for each patient's simulation needs which will include having the necessary xrays available for the physician
  • Position patient in prescribed simulation position including construction of necessary immobilization devices
  • Take the films and present to the Radiation Oncologist review
  • Assist patient to CT when the necessary treatment plan is prescribed. Assist CT technologist with set up of patient.
  • Record/copy all pertinent information into the patient's treatment chart
  • Discuss and confirm patient's underst
  • anding of the upcoming treatment schedule
  • Complete accurate documentation on films, in the patient record and associated charges
  • PERFORMS ANCILLARY DUTIES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO, SHIELD DESIGN, MLC SHAPER, DARK ROOM, STOCK SUPPLIES AND LINEN PLUS PROCESSOR MAINTENANCE.
  • Shield design/ MLC shaper
  • Perform all shield design including but not limited to MLC and lead blocks. Use safe mold room practices
  • Document device design and the date of the design in the proper chart location
  • All dark room duties including but not limited to film processing films, processor maintenance, ordering film hanging films for physician review and filing film jackets of patients
  • Stock work area & patient locker rooms for linen
  • Stock and empty linen in the treatment area and patient locker rooms
  • Notify the Medical Office Assistant to reoder necessary supplies
  • Support other areas of the department as needed, as assigned or as situation demands
  • COMMUNICATES WITH DEPARTMENT STAFF TO FACILITATE SMOOTH ROTATIONS. PROMOTES RESPONSIVE AND COST EFFECTIVE CARE FOR PATIENTS.
  • Shares knowledge and supports fellow therapists as they begin a new rotations
  • Readily available and willingly helps within the department
  • Displays a professional attitude in the work area toward fall staff, fostering mutual respect and creating a productive learning environment
  • Completes care while conserving resources

  • Assists with patient lifting in a timely manner
  • Accurate and legible documentation that supports daily charges
  • Notification of changes to Coordinator or Manager if necessary
  • Education
  • Associate's Degree in the field(s) of Radiology Technology Required
  • Work Experience
  • 1-3 years of experience in/with withstanding the unavoidable emotional and psychological pressures encountered on a daily basis. Preferred This position has the responsibility of standby call on weekends for the Radiation Oncology Department. Required.
  • License and Certification
  • Licensed in Illinois as RTT.
  • Radiation Therapy Technologist must hold registration or be board eligible through the ARRT.
  • Registry eligible candidates have six month to become RTT through ARRT.
