INSIDER Editorial Fellow, Home and lLifestyle (FALL/WINTER)
INSIDER is hiring a paid editorial fellow to write about home and lifestyle.
The Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers. The home and lifestyle fellow will work on the lifestyle team, pitching and writing quick news posts, slideshows, feature stories, and more, in INSIDER’s smart, conversational style geared towards a general audience.
They will cover fun and viral topics in the home and design space, writing stories like “The inventor of toilet paper rolls hung them in the 'over' position — and a modern homemaking expert says he was right,” “Amazon is selling a $15 plant that attracts monarch butterflies like a magnet,” “27 products you only need to buy once in your life,” “A stunning private island that comes with a 4-bedroom home is up for sale in Norway, and it's a hermit's dream,” and “30 behind-the-scenes secrets about HGTV's hit show 'Fixer Upper.’” They will also write art and design stories like “51 disappointing photos that show what famous art is really like,” “11 buildings that will play tricks on your eyes,” and “40 mind-boggling optical illusions that have stumped the internet,” as well as service-focused stories like “16 photos that show the worst living room design trends over the years,” “9 things you're making dirtier by cleaning them,” and “14 wild floats that are a must-have for your summer pool parties.”
All our editorial fellows should have:
- Experience reporting and writing (school publications are great)
- A passion for digital storytelling and voracious reading habits
- Familiarity with digital and social media
- Ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
- Light HTML and/or Photoshop experience
- Proofreading and copyediting skills
Additionally, for the home and lifestyle fellowship, we’re looking for someone with:
- An interest in everything under the home and lifestyle umbrella
- Knowledge of home and lifestyle trends
- Initiative to pitch a ton of great story ideas
This is an hourly paid fellowship based out of our New York office. Fellows are encouraged to work 40 hours a week, and fellowships run for six months. Start date for this position will be in September.
