Clinical Research Biostatistician I/II (TAM1901.19)

The Palo Alto Veterans for Research (PAVIR) is seeking a Biostatistician who will work with the Stanford faculty in Epidemiology and Medicine to evaluate hypertension management among persons in long-term care using national VA and Medicare data. The research is focused on using large administrative and cohort study data ('big data') to answer clinically relevant questions in cardiovascular prevention and aging research. 

The Biostatistician will primarily be responsible for extracting and cleaning data, developing analysis plans, performing and interpreting statistical analyses, and contributing to research publications and presentations.

This is a regular, full time (40 hours/week), Exempt (salary-paid) position. Benefits:

PAVIR is a nonprofit foundation affiliated with the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS). As a condition of employment, all PAVIR employees are required to have an approved appointment with VAPAHCS and complete a background check before they can commence work.

Duties:
  • Create analytic datasets by extracting and cleaning data;
  • Manage documentation of data extraction;
  • Design and review statistical methodology in statistical analysis plans and protocols;
  • Execute statistical analyses according to plans and protocols, as well as exploratory or ad-hoc analyses;
  • Interpret and present results for investigators using graphs and tables;
  • Summarize findings orally and in written form;
  • Participate in the preparation of papers for publication.

Requirements:

Education:
Required: Master's degree in biostatistics, epidemiology, health services research, or a related field.

Desired: Ph.D. in biostatistics, epidemiology, health services research, or a related field.
 
Experience:

Required: 2 years or more of experience in the analysis of clinical data with experience in large database analyses;

Desired:
  • Experience in cardiovascular epidemiology and/or aging research;
  • Experience with causal inference statistics;
  • Experience working with VINCI (VA);
  • Experience working with Minimum Data Set (CMS).

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:
  • Previous experience analyzing clinical data and dealing with large databases;
  • Experience with a wide range of statistical methods: multivariable linear and logistic regression, GEE and linear mixed models, survival analysis, propensity score methods, and multiple imputation.
  • Experience in programming and cleaning data;
  • Proficient in SAS, STATA, or R;
  • Proficient in SQL;
  • Experience with working with VA data preferred;
  • Strong ability to communicate technical results to both technical and non-technical audience (written and verbal);
  • Ability to work independently and within a team context;
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with minimal supervision;
  • Strong computer skills and ability to apply study-specific software;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint);
  • Strong organization skills and attention to detail;
  • Strong intellectual curiosity.

Environmental Conditions / Physical Demands:

Physical: Lifting up to 20 lbs occasionally, sitting and standing for long periods of time, bending, repetitive motion, etc.

Environmental: Exposure to office environment.
