Laboratory Animal Assistant

The Quality Systems and Regulatory Compliance Office optimizes the quality, reliability, and effectiveness of APHC products/services through monitoring, assessing, and education. The goal of the office is to achieve integrity in the testing and resultant data of accredited programs and human, animal, and environmental safety.

Under the direction of the mentor, the participant will take part in supporting the Veterinary Support Office (VSO) in achieving the mission of providing quality care for all animals used at APHC. The participant will collaborate with the research staff in their mission of quality research in respect to the use of laboratory animals, acting as a resource center for the research staff on all issues relating to laboratory animals, and collaborating with the institute in meeting its goal of humane treatment of laboratory animals. The participant will be mentored in the development and maintenance of training programs and standard operating procedures. This learning opportunity will allow the participant to be actively involved with all aspects of maintaining an accredited animal care facility, enabling the participant to learn practices and systems that are in use in laboratory animal research, an often under recognized discipline in the STEM program, in the Federal government as well as the private sector and academia.

This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by APHC. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

While participants will not enter into an employment relationship with DOD or any other agency, this opportunity will require a suitability investigation/background investigation. Any offer made is considered tentative pending favorable outcome of the investigation.

The participant should have animal handling experience and college coursework in Animal Sciences or Biological Sciences.
