Jacksonville Animal Care and Protective Services veterinary internship program description
Jacksonville Animal Care and Protective Services (ACPS) is an open-admission shelter serving the City of Jacksonville. Our average annual intake figures are approximately 11,000 animals per year, and with these, medical and surgical caseload is very high. We primarily treat dogs and cats however we occasionally see "exotic" pets, that are brought in as cruelty cases and abandonments. ACPS is open to the public six days per week, and other than emergency cases, surgery is performed five days per week.
Jacksonville, Florida is a highly diverse community. Jacksonville's Animal Care and Protective Services (ACPS) provides animal control to the citizens of Jacksonville by fair enforcement and community education. ACPS is dedicated to providing a high level of service to the citizens of Jacksonville and to saving lives of all adoptable animals in our community. Through grants and staff training, ACPS is also highly focused on lowering shelter intake, by promoting shelter diversion.
Our medical department consists of two full time staff veterinarians, ten veterinary technicians and one veterinary technician supervisor. We plan to have one veterinary intern this year, as well as being a prominent host of multiple veterinary student externs.
This position is a one-year, paid internship designed to provide a licensed veterinarian experience in all aspects of shelter medicine, surgery, outbreak management and preventive medicine in various shelter settings. The primary purposes of this position are to examine and triage animals entering the facility, develop and oversee appropriate treatment plans for animals requiring emergency or ongoing medical care, perform surgeries, monitor the health and care of animals housed at the shelter, community outreach and education, and act in the capacity of an expert witness in court cases as needed.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
This position is fully mentored by the staff veterinarians and reports to the Chief of Animal Care & Protective Services. Primary responsibilities include the following:
- Prescribes and performs treatment, therapy, medication, vaccination and other medical care.
- Performs high quality, high volume spay and neuter surgeries, as well as additional, soft tissue, orthopedic, and emergency surgeries.
- Advises the Chief and other managers in areas of veterinary medicine.
- Performs and/or interprets results from forensic examination and necropsies for criminal cases; and testifies to same as needed.
- Researches medical literature to develop and review standard operating procedures to remain current with new data.
- Communicates with the AC&PS Shelter Manager and partner facilities to arrange transport for diagnostics and/or continued care for critically injured or debilitated animals.
- Ability to provide compassionate patient care with a high degree of emotional resilience.
- Ability to accommodate various work assignments and schedules to meet shelter needs.
OPEN REQUIREMENTS/SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
- Must be a graduate of an accredited school of veterinary medicine.
- Ability to obtain Florida State veterinary license prior to employment and maintain.
