GIS Technician

Need a GIS Technician to join an expanding team out of our Cedar Rapids, IA office. The GIS Technician is responsible for acquiring, processing, and verifying GIS and related data from a variety of sources. The resulting accurate, Positive Train Control (PTC) -compliant data set is used by internal and external customers to support Positive Train Control systems designed to make railroad operations safer. 
 
The ideal candidate is one who enjoys maps or GIS; has demonstrated great attention to detail and level of accuracy; can work well individually; works well with others; and can be trained to become a resident expert in GIS. This job involves a mix of office work and travel opportunities. Work is a combination of individual work, work with a team, and meeting and working with railroad personnel in the field.
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
Include, but are not limited to:
  • Travel for field survey of railroad corridors and assets
  • Prepare for and conduct surveys using a variety of common and proprietary equipment
  • Maintain good working relationship with customer personnel
  • Review survey data using third-party software to extract, identify, attribute, and verify data
  • Verify the completeness and consistency of captured data
  • Combine and cross-reference data sources to build a complete dataset
  • Generate output data in a variety of formats
  • Work with customer personnel to ensure completeness, quality, accuracy, and integrity
  • Create survey reports, release notes, and other documentation of GIS work
  • Ensure that data, reports, and other deliverables meet professional standards
 
Qualifications:
  • Ability to work with, interpret, and synthesize a variety of data sources
  • Proficient in Excel
  • Ability to observe railroad safety procedures and follow safety-related instructions and signals
  • Experience using ArcGIS or another Geographic Information System (GIS) preferred but not required
  • Familiarity with Google Maps or Google Earth preferred but not required
  • Certificate or Degree in GIS (or related field) is preferred but not required
 
Pre-Employment Requirements:
  • Pass and maintain e-RAILSAFE pre-employment background check and safety certification.
  • Subject to motor vehicle report review.
  • Maintain valid driver’s license and endorsements as required per position.
  • Pass pre-employment physical, medical evaluation, and drug screen due to the safety sensitive nature of this position
  • Successfully complete and maintain any required safety certification and testing on an annual basis.
