Business Reporting Analyst

Our alumni data is one of the most valuable resources available to the Cal Alumni Association (CAA), an affinity-based nonprofit organization serving the University of California, Berkeley. The Alumni Data and Reporting team is responsible for cultivating the accuracy and integrity of alumni data. The ability to effectively harness alumni data enables CAA to accurately reach targeted audience segments, at the right time, through appropriate channels, and with the most relevant messages. We are seeking a highly motivated and team-oriented Business Reporting Analyst to collaborate with CAA business units in developing and delivering highly targeted audience segments that support email and direct mail marketing campaigns and to play a key role in providing input on our data strategy. 
As a full-time staff member of the Cal Alumni Association, you will join a dynamic and multifaceted nonprofit 
organization, committed to providing programs and services that keep Cal alumni of all ages and interests connected to UC Berkeley and to each other. CAA represents the global network of more than 500,000 alumni, and its programs include the award-winning California magazine, scholarships, a worldwide travel program, flagship alumni events, a summer family camp, and more. Our ongoing success relies on effective direct marketing, and well-targeted philanthropy and alumni engagement invitations. 
SUPERVISOR AND LOCATION
The Business Reporting Analyst reports to the Senior Manager of Data & Reporting. The position is located at our offices in Berkeley, CA. CAA is an independent, nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization, with headquarters at the Alumni House on the University of California, Berkeley campus.  
Responsibilities: 

  • In collaboration with our Marketing and Communications team, lead CAA business units in data strategy decisions that support email and direct mail marketing campaigns. Independently discern project scope, assess relevant data attributes, and create targeted audience lists based on outlined parameters.

  • Maintain data request queue; assess and assign tasks, deadlines, request parameters, and supporting documentation. 

  • Write complex queries in SQL to extract data from CRM, and use formulas and data management functions in Excel to QA data, and prepare it for use in the various communication platforms.

  • Manage the quality assurance request process and shepherd requests through to completion. Perform QA of large-scale targeted lists, including but not limited to biographical lookups verifying constituent communication preferences.

  • Utilizing a specific set of criteria, clean the exported data, ensuring that lists and reports are compliant with CAA data best practices and UC data use guidelines.

  • Perform data analysis on the effectiveness of campaigns, making and implementing recommendations. Collaborate with MarCom to report metrics and write impact reports, such as email performance, newsletter open rates, survey analysis, and more.

  • Collaborate with the MarCom and Technology departments to enhance CAA’s capabilities for data analytics.

  • Enforce CADS (UC Berkeley’s alumni database) privacy rules and standards for all records throughout CAA.

  • Serve as CAA’s primary point of contact for CADSHelp requests.

  • Resolve data discrepancies and report quality issues that arise out of the data acquisition process.

  • Reconcile reports and lists against the database, identifying corrupt or inaccurate data and eliminating duplicates and inaccuracies. Perform necessary updates to CADSBase.

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure updates to alumni records in CADS are accurate and timely for reporting alumni engagement.

  • Collaborate with program staff to gather, organize, and assign relevant codes to alumni constituents who have participated or engaged with CAA; manage activity request queue and ensure Senior Manager is notified of all updated codes. 

  • Support Senior Manager, Data & Reporting in Marketing Data Strategy meetings with all CAA departments to ensure data strategy is targeting the best audience for each campaign.

  • Work with Senior Manager to update, edit, and prepare the CAA Scorecard.

  • Maintain detailed documentation of all requests and track all active codes in master Google Sheet.

  • Maintain the data team’s runbook and ensure all processes are documented.

  • Take an active role in special projects, such as alumni surveys, year-end reporting, and querying the database for alumni demographic data and reporting to various campus partners.

  • Provide training to CAA business units and the data team student assistant(s).

  • Other duties as required.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience 

  • Minimum of at least three (3) years of professional data management experience or a combination of relevant education and work experience

  • Experience working with relational databases and with confidential and sensitive information

  • Fundamental knowledge of SQL, experience writing complex queries using large sets of data, and enthusiasm to learn more

  • Experience using project management software

  • Ability to think analytically and to translate and convey technical report development concepts to non-technical audiences

  • Strong knowledge of the report development process; ability to apply logic to query filters, outlining output columns, and the QA process.

  • Ability to perform statistical and data analysis, produce metrics, and make conclusions and recommendations for improvement.

  • Proficiency working with Windows environments

  • Proficiency working with Google Suite and MS Office

  • Advanced proficiency and experience using Excel (Vlookups, pivot tables) and the ability to manipulate large sets of data in Excel

  • Strong attention to detail 

  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously and meet strict deadlines

  • Exceptional organizational skills

  • Ability to work independently, as well as effectively communicate and collaborate with others in a fast-paced, dynamic environment

  • Must submit to and pass Consumer Report and FBI/DOJ fingerprint background investigations

  • Must possess valid CA driver’s license and clean driving record

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Working knowledge of the marketing production process

  • Experience working in a nonprofit or small business environment

  • Familiarity with UC Berkeley

  • Cal alum

Salary and Benefits: 

This is a full-time, exempt position located at Alumni House on the UC Berkeley campus in Berkeley, CA. The annual salary range for this position is $60,000 - $65,000, commensurate with job requirements and experience. The Business Reporting Analyst position is eligible to participate in company-sponsored benefits including health care, paid time-off, commuter benefits, and a 403(b) Retirement Saving plan.
