ROLE SYNOPSIS
Geophysicists can expect to work in at least two very different roles in the first few years at BP. These roles might be in the exploration, appraisal, development, production or research parts of the business. The overwhelming majority of our positions in the US are based in Houston and Anchorage where geophysicists work on a wide variety of technical challenges in support of our North America Gas, Gulf of Mexico Production, Western Hemisphere Exploration, Global Projects, and Subsurface Technology businesses.
Responsibilities are highly variable but typically are to:
• Contribute as a multi-disciplinary team to the planning and execution of at least one well through operations, monitoring real time drilling data against pre-drill prognosis and within the subsurface geomodels. Gain field and operations experience at the well site.
• Participate in a multi-disciplinary effort to evaluate subsurface uncertainty for a prospect / field in exploration, appraisal, development or production.
• Construct a framework structural model (fault and surfaces) to calculate bulk rock volume. Incorporate rock and fluid properties (porosity, net to gross, water saturation, etc) to complete a hydrocarbon in-place volumetric determination and uncertainty analysis for a field.
• Interpret 2D/3D seismic across a prospect or field to define overburden and reservoir horizons, delivering structural contour and fault maps, reservoir and seal isopach maps. Identify key interpretation uncertainties and develop alternative interpretation scenarios.
• Investigate the variation of seismic attributes and volumes (reflectivity, inverted, AVO data, etc.) to variations in rock properties (porosity, net to gross) in a field.
• Perform wavelet extraction for a 3D seismic volume tying multiple wells and building a single wavelet that is acceptable for the target interval.
• Complete a regional 2D / 3D seismic interpretation using an existing regional geological framework and seismic stratigraphic concepts. Integrate seismic mapping products into regional play fairway maps.
• With support from senior geophysicists, build understanding of fundamental algorithms behind major seismic processing steps (demultiple, velocity estimation, migration, signal processing, VSP) using internal and external tools and methods.
For Imaging Developers responsibilities include:
• With support from senior geophysicists, contribute to the development of computationally demanding seismic processing and imaging workflows/algorithms/codes in service of business priorities.
• Apply good geophysical judgement on the cost/quality curve for algorithm development, with the aim to develop algorithms and computational programs at the right time and quality to address business issues or add new capability.
• Develop/build-on cutting edge ideas and algorithms that either improve the performance or the efficiency or both for key steps in the seismic processing sequence such as, demultiple, velocity estimation, migration, signal processing & VSP.
• Work collaboratively with STC and HPC staff to identify and help evaluate future opportunities that may provide distinctive and differentiating use of existing resources or investment in emerging hardware or approaches to processing.
• The role also provides an opportunity to work on and test “out-of-the-box” blue sky ideas that may help solve practical seismic imaging challenges.

DEVELOPMENT
Our Upstream graduate program is known as the challenge program. As a challenger in upstream, you will enjoy real responsibility from day one – getting to grips with business challenges and gaining broad exposure to the business from the start.
We put development at the heart of our offer, giving graduates like you the chance to experience real operations first-hand. Through robust assessments, technical coaching and cutting-edge formal learning, we’ll drive your quick progression, making this an award winning program and an opportunity like no other.
The Upstream Challenge program is not rotational by nature – the focus is more on the depth of learning and expertise. In some cases Challengers may benefit from moving into a new role during the program, but this will be entirely driven by their individual development plan.
What we offer:
• A real job from day one
• Roadmaps to navigate technical development
• Support for professional qualifications
• Regular feedback and guidance
• Access to technical coaches
• Global and local networks
• Modern learning solutions available anywhere anytime

SEGMENT
The Upstream segment is responsible for our activities in oil and natural gas exploration, field development and production, as well as midstream transportation, storage and processing. We also market and trade natural gas, including liquefied natural gas, power and natural gas liquids.
We deliver our exploration, development and production activities through five global technical and operating functions:
• The exploration function is responsible for renewing our resource base through access, exploration and appraisal, while the reservoir development function is responsible for the stewardship of our resource portfolio over the life of each field.
• The global wells organization and the global projects organization are responsible for the safe, reliable and compliant execution of wells (drilling and completions) and major projects.
• The global operations organization is responsible for safe, reliable and compliant operations, including upstream production assets and midstream transportation and processing activities.
We optimize and integrate the delivery of these activities across 12 regions, with support provided by global functions in specialist areas of expertise: technology, finance, procurement and supply chain, human resources and information technology.
