Brief Description of Internship Position:

The Department of Conservation and Recreation, Division of Water Supply Protection, Quabbin Section manages approximately 81,000 acres which consists of 56,000 acres of protected land surrounding a 25,000-acre reservoir. The formation of Quabbin Reservoir necessitated the relocation of the interred from local cemeteries. Thus, Quabbin Park Cemetery was created to be the permanent resting location of the reinterred while providing additional space for former residents wishing to be interred with deceased family members.

The role of the intern will be to assist in developing a GIS database for the Quabbin Park Cemetery to be used in managing the cemetery plots and providing access to family members with ownership and interment locations.

Description of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Data entry of written interment information from scanned interment and lot ownership index cards using GIS or spreadsheet software.
  • Import GIS or spreadsheet data into a cemetery GIS database and match data to cemetery plots in the database.

Preferred Knowledge and Skills:

Basic knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS); ability to populate table data within a GIS environment. Knowledge of Microsoft Excel and ability to read cursive and printed handwriting for data entry into spreadsheet.

At least 1 semester of experience using GIS.
