Construction Safety Co-Op/Intern - Summer 2020

Summary/Objective
 
This position will be responsible for supporting regional and site-level projects associated with environmental health and safety. This will include assistance with personal protective equipment standardization, development/tracking of safety program initiatives, the performance of assessments, audits, analysis of EHS data and preparation of reports.
 
A Co-Op/Intern in this position will work primarily in the Safety Department within an office and exterior construction environment. In addition to challenging and engaging work assignments, students have the opportunity to professionally network and interact with construction professionals, safety professionals, and students from other universities at work and outside of work.
  
Essential Functions
·        Support research of new safety, health, and environmental regulations and industry practices applicable to company facet of operation (construction or general industry).
·        Assist in writing job specific Safety plans.
·        Performance of jobsite and facility safety audits.
·        Perform personal protective equipment assessments and evaluations.
·        Investigate and contribute to the resolution of employee occupational safety injuries, environmental incidents and property loss events.
·        Development of safety and environmental awareness training, communications material and employee events.
·        Assist with and conduct (as qualified) safety risk management, DOT , security and environmental training and education including compliance with federal and state occupational safety and health administration, environmental protection standards, federal motor carrier safety regulations/DOT regulations, security policies, Rabine Group and company operations division policy.
·        Provide support to the Safety manager for all related safety tasks including but not limited to safety training, program development and implementation, facility audits, injury reporting and administrative tasks.
  
Competencies
  •  Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Certified First Aid/CPR Trainer status preferred.
·        Ability to work independently and as part of team.
  • Effective project and time management skills, with the ability to balance multiple projects simultaneously is required.
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
 
 Requirements
·        Enrolled in a 4-year B.S. or M.S. graduate program from an accredited college or university in one of the following areas: Environmental sciences, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Health and Safety Management, or a related field.
·        Proficiency in MS Excel, PowerPoint and word.
·        The ideal candidate will also have a fundamental knowledge of OSHA regulations, ergonomics, and industrial hygiene.

Work Environment
This job operates in both a professional office setting and exterior construction environment. An exterior construction environment can be a conventional construction yard, pre-existing facility structure, or a combination of both.
 
Physical Demands
This position will present light to moderate physical demands. This can and will consist of traveling to local and regional jobsites to perform safety audits at active worksites. Worksites can include entering excavations, climbing onto roofs, to walking mass excavations from a hundred yards to several miles in length and width. Additional site conditions can include commercial roofs with fixed or extension ladder access; mass excavation projects including trenching with ladder or steep slopped soil ramps; parking lots with a wide variety of ground conditions (uncured or broken asphalt, uncured or broken concrete, gravel, dirt, clay, etc.). Audit performance can typically consist of up to six hours of walking and up to six hours of driving between sites. This can include the handling of material and equipment up to 75lbs through all identified site conditions.
 
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a Co-Op position. Typical days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to
5:00 p.m. Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but the employee must be available during the “core” work hours of 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and must work 37.5 hours each week to maintain its status. Extended hours, including early mornings, may be required based on the business need.
 
Travel
 Occasional travel (over-the-road and air) is required.
