GENERAL SUMMARY:
The AmeriCorps Program Specialist is a flexible, team oriented, and highly organized professional who is passionate about improving the lives of children. Primary responsibility is the coordination and implementation of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Mississippi Valley’s one-on-one youth mentoring programs.
 
SERVICE RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Member will serve alongside their fellow AmeriCorps Members to provide support to the mentors and children. A strong emphasis is placed on building relationships with students, parents and mentors.
 
The AmeriCorps member in this position will:
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships with elementary, middle and/or high schools within the assigned territory.
  • Partner with elementary, middle and/or high school staff and faculty to identify and recruit children for participation in BBBSMV mentoring programs.
  • Work with community partners to identify potential volunteer mentors for participation in BBBSMV mentoring programs.
  • Coordinate child enrollments, including child/parent/guardian interviews, communication with parents/guardians, communication with teachers or school officials, and completion of any other enrollment processes per the Service Delivery Model, Standards of Practice and BBBSMV Policies and Procedures.
  • Assist in matching children with appropriate mentors.
  • Provide timely and comprehensive written summaries of all contacts following national and local standards in the agency match management system.
  • Administer measurement tools, to include customer satisfaction surveys, program outcome evaluations, strength of relationship and youth outcome surveys.
  • Ensure the Standards of Practice, Service Delivery Model, and BBBSMV Policies and Procedures are being followed at all times. 
 
Complete the following:
  • Universal Precautions
  • Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter
  • CPR/First Aid
  • FERPA/Confidentiality in schools
  • Attend professional development, as scheduled
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in the field of education, recreation, human service, child development, psychology, social work or related field 
  • Consideration may be given to candidates: achieving a bachelor’s degree within 6 months; an associate’s degree and 4 years of relevant work experience (such as social work, counseling, social services, or child development); if no higher education at all, must have at least 8 years of relevant work experience (same fields as above)
  • Experience working with children and youth in a school setting
  • Understanding of best practices in child development, behavior management, developmentally appropriate activities, child safety, etc.
  • Be at least 18 years old, and a US citizen, national, or legal permanent resident alien
  • Demonstrate good communication skills, both written and oral
  • Give and accept feedback well

  • Be adept at multi-tasking and staying on task
  • Exhibit initiative, dedication and good judgment

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Walk and carry materials up and down steps
  • Stand and walk for extended periods of time
  • Lift 30 pounds
  • Bend, squat and kneel

PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES
Members will not engage in prohibited activities as defined by the Corporation on National and Community Service and as outlined in the Member Service Agreement.

SERVICE SCHEDULE:
Service activities will take place predominately at Big Brothers Big Sisters Main Office. Child Enrollment Specialist AmeriCorps Member will serve an average of 32-35-based on contract start date hours per week between the hours of 8am-5pm Monday thru Friday with ability to serve evenings and weekends as schedules dictate. Members may be asked to serve at special events and activities within the grant partnership that may be outside of the member’s normal service hours. Members are required to attend the monthly training offered to all AmeriCorps Members within the City of Davenport AmeriCorps Program as well as the National Day of Service. Quarterly Site Supervisors and Members will review the Members OnCorps hours and calendar to insure that the member is successfully on track to meet their contract hours.

SICK TIME/VACATION TIME/HOLIDAYS/TRAINING:
While we recognize that members may become ill, request to take vacation time, and or request holidays off, it is important to note that none are to be counted toward the hours needed to complete your term in service. Members are prohibited from accruing more than 20% of their total service hours in training.
 
EVALUATIONS:
Members will participate in a 25%, Mid-Term and End-Term Evaluations. Members will complete a self-evaluation and their Site Supervisor will complete an evaluation on the member. The member and site supervisor will meet, with or without the Program Manager, to discuss the evaluations in-depth.

LUNCH BREAKS:
Members that serve 8 hours or longer in a day must take a minimum of a 15 minute lunch break. Lunch breaks of 30 minutes or more do not count towards the hours needed to complete your term in service. 
 
BACKGROUND CHECKS & ALTERNATIVE DISPUTE RESOLUTION:
All member background checks will consist of 3 part check due to the fact that all of the members have contact with vulnerable population; this includes National Sex Offender, SING, and FBI fingerprinting. Member participation is contingent upon criminal history review; members have the opportunity to challenge the results. Challenges may be based on the assertion that there are errors on the report, but not on the program’s decision about whether the individual’s record disqualifies him/her from service in the program.
