Financial Analysts in Commercial Banking work on teams that develop and manage relationships with clients using our wide range of banking products and services. Because Financial Analysts play an important role with our business clients, we employ the very best people in this important position.

Your training for the Commercial Analyst Development Program will be a unique combination of experiences: classroom learning, e-Learning, case studies and lectures, peer partnering, coaching and job shadowing exercises.

Phase 1: Building a Solid Skill Foundation (10 weeks)

  • In the classroom with a top-rated graduate school professor and industry professionals: financial accounting, credit underwriting, financial modeling, business writing and personal effectiveness
  • BMO Harris subject matter experts use lectures and cases to reinforce theory
  • Case simulation for practical application of classroom learning prior to working on live deals
  • Small, interactive meetings with leaders from BMO Harris Bank and Bank of Montreal

Phase II: The Credit Pool (12 weeks)

During this phase of the training program, analyst trainees will assist Financial Analysts, Associates and Relationship Managers with:

  • Annual Reviews, amendments, waivers
  • Statement spreading and basic financial modeling
  • Industry analysis
  • Risk ratings and pricing models

The Credit Pool affords the analyst trainees the opportunity to use and hone the skills developed in the first phase of the Program. Assignments completed during the credit pool phase come from nearly every group in Commercial Banking. As such, the analyst trainees will be exposed to multiple markets, financial analysts, credit officers, senior bankers and executive management.

Phase III: Credit Rotations (18 weeks)

During this phase of the training program, each analyst trainee will spend 6 weeks in three different markets, working on both new and existing client relationships while gaining exposure to the leadership teams, relationship managers and financial analysts in those markets. Rotations also allow the analyst trainees the opportunity to compare and contrast different markets which will help in their assessment of the different placement opportunities.

Phase IV: Ad hocs and Placement

During the second and third credit rotations, each analyst trainee will complete one practice and one final ad-hoc, respectively. The ad hocs include a full credit write-up and presentation. Successful completion of the final ad hoc is required for a placement into the line of business.

Subject to the needs of the specific line of business, placements will occur in the following groups in Commercial Banking: Corporate Finance (Asset Based Lending, Sponsor Finance and Sponsor Fund Lending), Diversified Industries (Commercial Middle Market, Institutional Markets, Mid-Corporate and Engineering & Construction), Food Consumer & Retail, Financial Institutions, Dealership Finance and Commercial Real Estate.

For Chicago-based trainees, placements are ultimately driven by the needs of the Bank. However, personal preferences and performance in the earlier phases of the Program will also have an impact on placements.

“Expansion market” trainees are hired for specific markets and will be pre- placed.

Qualifications:

• 3.2 GPA or better

• Two accounting courses preferred

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Proven analytical capabilities

• Leadership experience

• Strong personal and team work ethic
