The Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Environmental Services Division, has a Geologist 2 vacancy in the Water Supply Engineering Section of the Water Quality Bureau. The Geologist 2 collects, manages, organizes, and analyzes groundwater and well information related to public wells for the State’s Source Water Protection program. 

Primary responsibility will include the following:
The collection and management all public well information for Iowa's public water supplies. Utilizing GIS software to update the Source Water Protection Program's "Public Wells" geospatial database with new information. Ensuring all other state well databases are continuously updated with accurate and complete public well information.
 
Produce accurate source water protection areas for all groundwater-sourced public water supplies utilizing GIS software, pump test analysis software, groundwater modeling software, and geo-scientific resources. Updating the Source Water Protection Program's "Groundwater Capture Zone" geospatial database with new source water areas. Ensuring all dependent web-applications are updated with the current groundwater capture zone information.

Creating a “Phase 1” Assessment when a new community water supply is formed and updating as needed. Assessments are updated when new public wells are drilled, existing public wells are activated, new local hydrogeologic information is available, or a request is made by the community. Review and edit all "Phase 2" Plans submitted to the Source Water Protection Program. Provide technical assistance to all community water supplies and stakeholders completing Phase 2 plans.

Completing all GIS and data management duties required by the Source Water Protection Program, including: potential contaminant source coverage, other wells coverage, karst geology coverage, capture zone landcover data table, finished drinking water nitrate data table, as well as other various data entry in program and EPA tracking spreadsheets.

Essential Functions
·        Utilize education, knowledge, experience and understanding of GIS, geology, and hydrogeology to perform duties.
·        Update and manage public water supply well data including location, driller's logs, pump tests, and pumping rates.
·        Create and update groundwater capture zones for all wells utilizing ArcView, ArcMap, and groundwater modeling programs.
·        Create, update and track Source Water Assessment Phase 1 reports for all new public water supply wells.
·        Review, edit and provide assistance on all source water phase 2 plans for public water supplies.
·        GIS and data management of potential contaminant source coverage areas, well coverage, and updating karst geology tables.
·        Communicate fluently and tactfully both written and orally in English to water operators, consulting engineers, stakeholders and the public.
·        Demonstrate initiative, customer service and team orientation while displaying high standards of ethical conduct.
·        Travel to remote sites for meetings and technical assistance with mobility to access well sites in rugged terrain.
·        Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, adjust to change, work pressures or difficult situations without undue stress. 

Special Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Environmental Science, Geoscience, Geography, Hydrogeology, or Earth Science. Preference will be given to those with related work experience using GIS in the geology and hydrogeology field and experience with groundwater modeling. Valid Class C driver’s license.

Starting salary for a Department of Natural Resources Geologist 2 is $49,462.40.
