Lead, Exception Handling, Laboratory Processing - Tuesday - Friday, 8:00pm - 6:30am

Summary of Major Responsibilities

The Specimen Processing Exception Handler Lead performs the functions of Specimen Processor and Exception Handler under the guided direction of the Specimen Processing Supervisor, Specimen Processing Manager or designee. The Exception Handling team provides support to both the Specimen Processing Laboratory and the Technical Laboratory. The Specimen Processing Exception Handler Lead will follow all laboratory policies and procedures and maintain accurate data reporting practices to ensure consistent and diligent execution of specimen processing. In this leadership position the Specimen Processing Exception Hander Lead supports the Specimen Processing Supervisor or designee and shares the responsibility of ensuring the Specimen Processing department operates effectively. The Specimen Processing Exception Handler Lead also acts as a subject matter expert in the exception handling processes and provides additional support and guidance to that team.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform all assigned job duties following laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Process laboratory specimens with an emphasis on accuracy, timeliness, completeness and compliance.
  • Handle and dispose of all specimens following standard precautions and applicable safety policies.
  • Investigate and resolve specimen issue(s) or test issue(s) for the entire Exact Sciences Clinical Laboratory to ensure timely and accurate reporting of results.
  • Maintain accurate records of problems and problem resolution related to specimen processing, specimen testing, inventory and equipment.
  • Assign and organize work priorities within the department utilizing support of Specimen Processing Associate, Exception Handler, Workflow Coordinator, and Trainer.
  • Assure the work quantity and quality of the Specimen Processing department by effectively directing workflow and managing available resources, including the exception handling team.
  • Participate in department projects and initiatives including but not limited to quality improvement teams (QIT), and quality improvement investigations such as root cause analysis (RCA), standard operating procedure (SOP) development, department inspections and audits.
  • Support Specimen Processing Supervisors and Manager with employee redirection and recognition.
  • Follow proper specimen identification procedures in the execution of all job duties.
  • Work cross-functionally with Call Center, Provider Support and Quality Assurance.
  • Perform all essential responsibilities of the Specimen Processing Associate, Specimen Processing Associate II, Exception Handler, Workflow Coordinator, and Trainer and perform them as directed.
  • Meet standards for production and accuracy within 6 months of in shift date.
  • Maintain and update Exception Handling documents to accurately reflect current processes.
  • Develop weekly Exception Handling meeting schedule and agenda.
  • Cultivate and implement ideas into Exception Handling workflow.
  • Plan and communicate daily workflow to Exception Handling team.
  • Attend LIS meetings, investigate and troubleshoot process upgrades.
  • Foster communication and teamwork between all Exception Handling shifts and leadership roles.
  • Monitor and investigate Exception Handling LIS pending lists.
  • Effectively prioritize and delegate tasks.

  • Ability to work seated for approximately 50% of a typical working day. Ability to work standing for approximately 50% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to grasp with both hands; pinch with thumb and forefinger; turn with hand/arm; reach above shoulder height.
  • Ability to work in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for approximately 75% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to comply with any applicable personal protective equipment requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.
 


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • 2+ years of experience working in a laboratory or similar environment (i.e. maintaining sample integrity, following procedures and protocols, sample collection/handling).
  • General knowledge of CAP, GLP, GDP, CLIA, New York Department of Health (NYDOH) and HIPAA.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
  • Demonstrate ability to perform the Essential Duties of the position with or without accommodation.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience leading and motivating others, even when not in a position of authority.
