Archives Internship - Iowa City

Job Description
The Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs is looking to fill a Archives Internship

Internship Purpose and Goals
  • Pre-process a special collections manuscript collection. 
  • Assess the collection under staff guidance.
  • Developing a processing plan for to create future intellectual and physical control.
  • Perform initial physical sort of the collection into an intellectual and physical arrangement.
  • Refine the organization plan as time allows and need dictates.
  • Create a preliminary finding aid.
 
Time Commitment
  • Duration: January - May 2020
  • Frequency: 6-12 hours per week, unpaid, up to 150 total hours.
  • Hours must be completed Monday-Friday, 9:00 am – 4:30 pm.
 
Duties and Essential Activities
  • Follow existing procedures to use computer and Microsoft software systems. 
  • Use appropriate care and follow existing procedures when handling original materials.
  • Record all critical metadata information about collections. 
 
Physical and Mental Requirements
  • Pursuing a degree in history, political science, or related field of study in social science or the humanities. Candidates either in a master degree program or planning to enter an advanced collections management program are preferred.
  • Education in and experience with Archival processing standards.
  • Strong research skills are expected.
  • Must conduct oneself in a mature/professional manner and be able to work accurately and efficiently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs., and use step ladders.
  • Experience with computer skills and camera use is a plus.
 
Training
  • The selected intern will be trained in advanced principles of collections processing.
 
Department/Supervisor
  • The internship will be completed for the Archives and Library Bureau at the Centennial Building in Iowa City.
  • The internship will be supervised by the State Archivist, Historical Program Specialist and assigned staff.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Applicants for positions in this class must be currently enrolled students in a degree program at an accredited educational institution, as determined by the Iowa Department of Administrative Services – Human Resources Enterprise.
