Internship - Human Resources, Fall 2020

The purpose of the internship will be to provide a broad training experience outlining the YMCA's mission and its impact on the community and the associated non-profit operational practices/procedures that support these efforts. Specific human resources focused training, tasks and special projects will provide practical and real life experience with all areas of non-profit HR operations including, but not limited to, Recruitment, Employee Development, Policy Development, Performance Evaluation, Employment Law and Regulations, Benefit Administration, and other general human resource functions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
You will learn to:
1. Serve as a role model to members and Y staff and demonstrate the YMCA mission, vision and values of the YMCA movement.
2. Observe and participate in the onboarding process for new staff.
3. Review and participate in leadership development programs to build presentation skills.
4. Review HR metrics to understand human resources impact on an organization.
5. Assist in project to update and revamp employee handbook and policy manual.
6. Work with HR systems and data collection to understand their use and necessity
7. Assist with HR file audit to gain knowledge of information retention and storage.
8. Participate in webinars to expand knowledge of current and pending employment regulations and legislation and the impact on organizations and employee practices.
9. Gain knowledge, experience and understanding of legal requirements regarding leaves of absence, workers' compensation and unemployment.
10. Insight to the daily operations that occur in non-profit human resource department.
11. Understand and follow all safety rules and regulations of the SCFY including knowledge of emergency procedures and location of emergency equipment.
12. Regular and timely adherence to respective schedule/meetings.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
1. Background in Human Resources, Business Management, Non-profit Management or other related discipline.
2. Strong communication skills.
3. Proficient in Microsoft Suite Office.
4. Organized, with an ability to prioritize time-sensitive assignments.
5. Interest in nonprofit management and community development.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this project, the intern is frequently required to sit for great lengths of time; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. Position may require some periods of standing and walking. The intern must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
PROJECT ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this project, the intern primarily works in an office
environment but is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts associated with fitness and commercial cleaning equipment. The noise level in the work environment can vary from quiet to moderate during office hours and moderate to loud during event hours.

Schedule is Flexible with start and end dates and hours worked throughout the week. An agreed upon schedule will be determined with the candidate selected based upon mutual best interest.
