EMS Highway Safety Specialist

You will serve as a Highway Safety Specialist (EMS Specialist) in NHTSA's Office of Emergency Medical Services. Note: This position closes on 10/14/19.

As a Highway Safety Specialist, you will:
  • Work with the technical complexities and the policy issues of comprehensive emergency medical services (EMS) systems, 911 systems, highway safety, trauma systems, at the local, State and Federal level.
  • Demonstrate verbal, written, negotiating and persuasion skills in working with officials at all governmental levels and with private industry and special interest groups related to emergency medical services, 911 systems and highway safety issues.
  • Work on a team (i.e., improvement, issue, program, or inter-agency team), work under pressure and respond in a tight time frame.
  • Participate in national EMS performance measures initiatives, including interfacing with national EMS performance measures organizations, establishment of performance measurement parameters and initiates an ongoing evaluation and performance improvement strategy. 
  • Coordinate the activities of the Federal Interagency Committee on EMS (FILEMS) and the National EMS Advisory Council (NEMSAC).

NHTSA is looking for a moderately experienced candidate to conceptualize, develop, manage, and oversee projects of national significance to improve emergency medical services and emergency health care including those that implement projects that demonstrate successful strategies for enhancing the collection and strategic analysis of emergency medical services data which result in improved EMS, highway safety and pre-hospital health care systems throughout the nation. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the use of data for policy making and influencing public opinion. He/she must also have knowledge in current EMS clinical and systems literature.

To qualify for the GS-09 on Experience, you must have at least one full year of specialized equal or equivalent experience to GS-07, it must include:
  • Experience establishing relationships and working with local, regional, state, or national organizations on emergency medical services (EMS) or other EMS related issues.
