Student Hand Hygiene Observer

BASIC FUNCTION
Audits hand hygiene adherence throughout the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics using the REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture) secure web application. Failure to perform proper hand hygiene is one of the leading preventable causes of healthcare-associated infections. This position requires attention to detail and the ability to work independently.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES
·      Monitor health care staff as they enter and exit patient rooms, and record whether they perform hand hygiene (e.g., wash their hands or use the alcohol hand rub)
·      Enter hand hygiene observation data into REDCap after each round of audits
·      Maintain patient confidentiality
                                                              
QUALIFICATIONS
·      Must be organized and have excellent time management skills
·      Must be able to work independently and be self-motivated
·      Must be able to exercise a high level of discretion, respecting patient privacy
·      Must be a UI registered student (preference for health sciences, pre-health sciences, and nursing students)
·      Must not have a record of any student misconduct – disciplinary or academic
·      Subject to successful completion of a criminal background check
·      Must complete a pre-employment health screening in the University Employee Health Clinic and 2 tuberculin (TB) skin tests

RATE OF PAY:
$10/hour
 
WORK SCHEDULE: 
·      Up to 10 hours per week through the academic year and academic breaks
·      Preference for students who can commit to 5-10 hours per week
·      Flexible schedule, may work weekdays and/or weekends;
·      Morning availability is preferred
 
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Position is supervised by the Director of the Quality Improvement Program (QuIP); functional supervision provided by the QuIP Infection Preventionists

You can expect to learn skills such as time management, balancing priorities, attention to detail, interpersonal communication, customer service experience, working with people from diverse backgrounds and working as part of a team. Although your student job at UIHC may not be directly related to your future profession, the skills you learn here will help you in your chosen career path and give you valuable work experience to strengthen your resume.
