Cognitive Performance Research Assistant

The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) 711th Human Performance Wing (711 HPW) is a unique combination of three units: the Airman Systems Directorate (RH), the US Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM) and the Human Systems Integration Directorate (HP). Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will be involved in executing and administering Air Force and Navy-relevant research in a joint research project that focuses on applied neuroscience. Participants can expect to take active roles in laboratory research development and execution, with projects primarily focusing on experimental design, data collection and analysis on various testing protocols, and documenting and reporting regularly to their peers and principle investigators on progress of research efforts. Other activities to enhance learning may include travel to various locations for data collection, contributing to protocol writing and institutional review board approval, completing literature reviews, and collaborating with other organizations and scientists to complete research objectives.
There will be developmental opportunities, such as helping with research planning, publication, and presentation. The research participant will be encouraged to provide input on current research efforts and aid in the development of future grant applications and protocols. The opportunity to learn how to develop protocols and research proposals will aid the participant in their pursuit of more advanced academic work or as a practitioner in applicable environments.
Appointment Length
This appointment is an eight month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
Participant Benefits
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by USAFRL. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
Qualifications
Candidates should be currently enrolled in pre-medicine at the undergraduate level.
