Extracorporeal Life Support for treatment of lung and renal failure

The U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR) is one of six research laboratories within the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command of the U.S. Army Medicine Command. The Institute is the Army's lead research laboratory for improving the care of combat casualties. The Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS) research projects within the Department of Expeditionary Critical Care focus on lung failure, renal failure and combinations thereof occurring due to severe combat relevant trauma and resuscitation during 72-hour long round the clock studies at prolonged filed care time lines. Participants will collect, analyze and monitor vital signs and physiologic measurements; assist in conducting the studies; and, under the supervision of the Principal Investigator operate infusion pumps and various ECLS devices. They will also provide support during ex-vivo and in-vivo experiments on benchmarking of ECLS devices. The participant will learn techniques in experimental design, data collection and analysis, and prepare scientific abstracts and manuscripts.

This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by USAISR. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

Current undergraduate student or recent graduate with skills and desire to participate in research opportunity focused on ex vivo and in vivo testing of state of the art extracorporeal life support technology.
