Description
The Public Health Center’s Health Effects Division of the Directorate of Toxicology provides worldwide support through the performance of basic and applied research in toxicology, environmental biology, and chemistry. The program focuses on conducting toxicological research pertinent to effects from environmental exposures. Scientists in this program lead the DoD community in assessment of the environmental impact of new formulations for explosives, propellants, colored smokes, and illumination materials. The program strives toward the development of safe health-based exposure criteria for military-related substances and new methods for rapid, accurate, and cost effective technologies for determining the effects of toxic hazards to environmental receptors and their transport through environmental media.
The Health Effects Division's focus is environmental toxicology. The Department of Defense uses a wide range of chemicals that soldiers, civilians, and ecological receptors may be exposed to via drinking water or through the food chain. This Division assesses the toxicity of novel formulations the Army is developing to replace degreasers, adhesives, smokes, propellant, and explosives of known toxicity. Our phased approach to toxicology includes predictive computer modeling, in vitro screening assays, and whole animal exposures. As a participant you will have an opportunities to learn from any component of this process as the assessments occur, although most laboratory activities currently ongoing include in vitro tests. Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will also learn exact and detailed data entry, record keeping as it pertains to the project, and documentation of laboratory findings. The intern will gain experience in good laboratory practices, laboratory management procedures, and record keeping as well as proficiency in molecular analysis techniques.

Appointment Length
This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

Participant Benefits
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by APHC. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:
Detail oriented and capable of meeting deadlines
  • Health Insurance Supplement. Participants are eligible to purchase health insurance through ORISE.
  • Relocation Allowance
  • Training and Travel Allowance

Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

Additional Information
While participants will not enter into an employment relationship with DOD or any other agency, this opportunity will require a suitability investigation/background investigation. Any offer made is considered tentative pending favorable outcome of the investigation.

Qualifications
An ideal candidate for this internship will possess the following attributes:
• Organizational skills with emphasis on maintaining orderly systems, processes, and records.
• Ability to follow established, written protocols with accuracy and precision.
• Keen observational skills to monitor experiment results and maintain instrument logs.
• Interest in working with sophisticated analytical instruments and learning new software.
• Ability to maintain focus while performing repetitive tasks.
• Ability to handle live animals.
Basic knowledge of laboratory functions and molecular techniques is desirable but not required in a successful applicant.
