Marketing and Communications Internship -- Spring Semester
The Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art in downtown Indianapolis seeks a highly motivated college student to assist the Marketing and Communications Department in its efforts to promote and raise awareness of the museum’s events, exhibits and programs during spring 2020. Through this unpaid spring semester internship, a student will have the opportunity to learn practical, valuable professional workplace skills that will bolster any resume.
The internship lasts from early January to early May 2020. The spring internship position helps execute marketing and communications tasks in support of the museum’s marketing goals and objectives. Major responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Assisting the Marketing and Communications staff with tasks at spring exhibit openings and programs
• Contacting media outlets to pitch museum exhibits and events
• Assisting in maintaining the museum’s daily presence on multiple social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and others
• Updating multiple tourism calendars to increase online presence of museum exhibits, events and festivals
• Taking photographs and shooting video, often on short notice, of museum events and activities.
• Writing items or articles for the museum’s e-newsletter, Eiteljorg Blog or Storyteller magazine, which could involve interviewing the subjects of those articles
• Creating new content for the museum’s newly-redesigned website
• Organizing office files and materials
• Working on grassroots initiatives such as building targeted direct audience lists and fulfilling marketing materials and messages to those audiences
• Attending regular meetings internally with museum staff and externally with tourism groups to maintain marketing visibility; and other duties as assigned.
The internship would start on or around Jan. 8, 2020, and would continue through early May 2020, but can be adjusted to finish earlier or later depending on the applicant’s college calendar and requirements. Typically, this position would be 10 to 15 hours per week during business hours on weekdays, at the museum or in the nearby vicinity. There will be some events on evenings or weekends that the intern is required to work, including celebrations for an exhibit opening Friday night, Feb. 7 and Saturday afternoon, Feb. 8, 2020, plus another exhibit opening Friday night, March 6, 2020, and a concert event Saturday afternoon, March 14, 2020. The applicant must have reliable transportation to and from the museum.
The applicant should be an enrolled university student or recent graduate majoring in public relations, journalism, digital marketing, communications, advertising, tourism or a related field. The applicant should have experience with social media and social media marketing, as well as Microsoft Office software, Adobe Suite software and experience with photography and video production. Additional experience with html/css website design is preferred.
Qualities the Eiteljorg Museum seeks in an intern are: reliability, dependability, creativity, self-confidence, good verbal and written skills, a pleasant, professional demeanor, strong time-management skills, ability to follow specific directions, willingness to take on assignments that have tight deadlines, a flexible schedule, a desire to learn from experienced colleagues and the ability to work cooperatively with people of many backgrounds. The intern must follow all museum policies and procedures in the museum employee handbook.
This is an unpaid position, but the intern will have access to certain cost-saving benefits, including free parking 24/7 at the museum’s underground parking garage at a prime location in White River State Park in downtown Indianapolis, free admission to the museum and museum programs, and discounts to the museum café and museum store. During the internship, the marketing intern will be able to attend and enjoy the Eiteljorg’s high-quality receptions. There are many intangible benefits, including the opportunity to interact with and learn from museum executives and curatorial staff about the nonprofit world, attend informal orientation sessions, hone professional office skills, build a portfolio, develop a professional network and acquire effective job references. While gaining this valuable job experience, the intern will get to work in a beautiful museum building surrounded by amazing art while working with talented colleagues. The museum will attempt to schedule marketing internship hours to coordinate with classes or any outside employment commitments the intern might have.
Although the Eiteljorg Museum cannot guarantee that an intern will receive college credit for the internship, the Marketing and Communications staff will be happy to coordinate with the intern’s faculty advisor to provide documentation that might assist the student in receiving academic credit for their work, time and effort.

A conviction for criminal mischief or a similar offense would disqualify an otherwise-qualified applicant from eligibility to serve as an Eiteljorg intern.
