Dairy Manufacturing Intern

B SUMMARY
The Dairy Manufacturing Intern is provided the opportunity to have hands on experience throughout the manufacturing facility. Valuable time is spent learning the production process including pasteurized process slices, loaves and natural shreds.  The Intern will gain a variety of knowledge in human relations, production, safety, quality, sanitation and maintenance.
ENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
This list of duties and responsibilities is not all inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time.
The intern will learn what it’s like to supervise in a food manufacturing facility. You will receive the opportunity to follow, learn and work with our leadership team to gain hands on experience in the following areas:
Human Relations: 
  • Gains working relationships with leadership including teaching, effective communication methods, an understanding of company policy and procedures and learning to enforce them. 
  • Learn to trouble shoot production problems. Lead production workers to brainstorm root causes and identify appropriate corrective actions.

Production:
  • Learn the operation of the production process including pasteurized process slices, loaves and natural shreds.
  • Participates in staff planning and process improvements.  
  • Actively meet and speak with production employees to learn various aspects and responsibilities of their jobs.
  • Acquire current knowledge and understanding of regulations, industry trends, current practices, new developments and applicable laws related to production in a dairy manufacturing environment.
Safety:
  • Learns and assists with safety, health and environmental programs. 
  • Works in a safe manner at all times and wears all required personal protective equipment to perform specified jobs.
  • Collects data to determine effectiveness of implemented process improvements.
  • Participates in safety committee meetings.
Quality: 
  • Learn and assist with quality inspections including finish product, regulatory, compliance, pest control, employee GMPs, training compliance and HACCP compliance.
  • Understand and adhere to Good Manufacturing Practices.
  • Learn to anticipate, trouble shoot and resolve problems with GMPs and/or sanitation quickly.
  • Perform documentation review and inspection of materials, packaging and finished product.
  • Actively meet and speak with quality employees to learn various aspects and responsibilities of their jobs.
Sanitation:
  • Participates in programs and procedures required to ensure plant’s master sanitation program. 
  • Learn and assist with conducting pre-operational and routine sanitation inspections.
Maintenance: 
  • Work on projects to improve employee, process and plant efficiencies.
  • Actively meet and speak with maintenance employees to learn the various aspects and responsibilities of their jobs and to communicate about production issues. 
  • Learn to work safety and efficiently, while maintaining accuracy.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Currently enrolled in an Associate, Bachelor, or Master’s program with an interest in expanding knowledge in the food manufacturing industry.
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Physical Demands – While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be able to work independently and multitask in a fast paced environment. The employee must lift up to 50lbs and must be able to push and pull up to 75lbs; as well as have the ability to climb ladders and work at elevations of six (6) feet.
Work Environment – While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to work near moving mechanical parts. The employee may be regularly exposed to high noise environments. The employee is occasionally exposed to refrigerated temperature conditions. The employee will occasionally be exposed to chemicals used in the process.
Schedule: Intern schedule may vary based on the department and start up and shut down times, but the typical work week will be Monday thru Friday, 8a.m. to 4pm from May to August.
