Internship - 6 Month Field Geologist (May 2020 start)

Summary

Barr is seeking a geology student to work on challenging geotechnical and civil engineering projects involving coordination of field activities, data collection, and problem-solving. Project responsibilities may include drilling observation and field crew coordination; geotechnical drilling and instrumentation estimates; surveying; vibration monitoring; and geotechnical construction observation. Preparation of drilling logs, geologic maps, cross-sections, and technical reports will be expected in this role. Onsite investigation tasks may include classifying soil and bedrock samples, and collecting samples for field screening and laboratory analysis. The work will involve frequent out-of-town assignments. All applicants should attach transcripts with their application.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Ongoing enrollment in a Geology degree program, or related
  • Grade-point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Thorough, organized, and detailed approach
  • Ability and willingness to work collaboratively with project team members in a high-energy work environment that encourages self-initiative
  • A flexible working style and the ability to work independently and with teams of specialists to meet client and project needs
  • Willingness to modify personal schedules when required to meet deadlines and client needs
  • Willingness and ability to regularly travel
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Windows OS and Microsoft Office software
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing 30 pounds or more
  • Acceptable driving record and ability to rent a vehicle for out of town assignments
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship
  • Availability for full-time employment for a minimum of 6 months (approximately May-November/December)

Preferred Qualifications
  • Grade-point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale
  • Academic coursework directly related to the job responsibilities described above
  • Construction materials testing experience

NOTE: Applicants must be able to work in locations that feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and to enter and work within facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Safety training will be provided.
