A research opportunity is currently available at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN), Office of Food Safety (OFS) located in Dauphin Island, Alabama.

Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will be trained in the following activities:
  • Perform chemical analytical laboratory research including: development and evaluation of screening and confirmatory analytical methods for identifying and quantifying algal toxins in seafood
  • performing standardized in vitro assays and analytical methods for the detection of toxins in seafood, including outbreak samples
  • Collaborate with senior scientists in planning and carrying out research studies and related activities, including:participating in laboratory exposures and field collection of a variety of toxic algae and seafood species
  • large scale isolation of toxins and their metabolites from seafood for structural elucidation
  • contributing to the production of reference materials


Qualifications
The qualified candidate should have received a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Analytical Chemistry or General Chemistry. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Preferred skills:
  • Knowledge and skills in analytical chemistry, including basic chemical principles, theories, and practices relevant to analytical methods development
  • Knowledge and skills in the use of computers and software for instrumentation control, word and data processing, and graphical presentation
  • Ability to collaborate with senior scientists in the preparation of oral and written reports on study methods, results, interpretations and analyses
  • Ability to communicate effectively
