Spring 2020 Undergraduate/Graduate Intern, Analytics
For nearly 100 years, the ACLU has been our nation’s guardian of liberty, working in courts, legislatures, and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution and laws of the United States. Whether it’s ending mass incarceration, achieving full equality for the LGBT community, advancing racial justice, establishing new privacy protections for our digital age, or preserving the right to vote or the right to have an abortion, the ACLU takes up the toughest civil liberties and civil rights cases and issues to defend all people from government abuse and overreach. With more than one million members, activists, and supporters, the ACLU is a nationwide organization that fights tirelessly in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and Washington, D.C., for the principle that every individual’s rights must be protected equally under the law, regardless of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, disability, national origin, and record of arrest or conviction.
The Analytics Department of the ACLU’s National Office in New York, NY has an opening for a Spring Internship starting in January 2020. A stipend is available for those students who do not receive outside funding and/or course credit. Arrangements can be made with the student’s school for a work/study stipend or course credit.
INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW
Interns complete discrete projects that support our quantitative issue research, advocacy support (e.g. creating analytics tools and conducting electoral analyses), and development / engagement support (e.g. by building revenue projection models). We also see the internship program as an opportunity to build our hiring pipeline for future roles, and to create members of the data science / analytics community who are focused on and prepared to use those skills to advance social justice & the ACLU's mission after they complete their internships. The internships require a semester-long commitment, and can be a full time position or a part-time position with a minimum commitment of 16 hours per week.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Interns will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience by working alongside the Analytics team on the following:
- Conducting quantitative analyses
- Helping to build analytical tools
- Reviewing relevant literature to select appropriate methods and data sources
- Collecting, cleaning, and joining datasets from diverse sources
- Interpreting the results of analyses for non-technical audiences
- Presenting work internally and to stakeholders in other teams
- Other duties as assigned
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
The internship is open to undergraduate or graduate student* in a quantitative field (e.g., Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Data Science, Mathematics, Computer Science) or with significant quantitative coursework (e.g., Statistics, Computer Programming, Linear Algebra) . A preference is given to graduate students. Interns should possess the following:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
- Familiarity with Python or R, or similar analytics and programming languages
- Excellent problem-solving skills
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- Passion for civil liberties and civil rights
- Commitment to work collaboratively and respectfully toward resolving obstacles and/or conflicts
- Familiarity with Looker, Tableau, or other visualization tools a plus
Applications will be considered on a rolling basis and accepted until the position is filled. We will accept recently graduated students for full-time internships, but we don't anticipate having jr-level openings in some of these fields in the near future.
