Research Technician I, Imaging and Immunology

Overview
Cures Start Here. At Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, home to three Nobel laureates, interdisciplinary teams of world-renowned scientists seek new and innovative ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening diseases. Fred Hutch’s pioneering work in bone marrow transplantation led to the development of immunotherapy, which harnesses the power of the immune system to treat cancer. An independent, nonprofit research institute based in Seattle, Fred Hutch houses the nation’s first cancer prevention research program, as well as the clinical coordinating center of the Women’s Health Initiative and the international headquarters of the HIV Vaccine Trials Network. Careers Start Here.

A joint research technician position (full-time) is immediately available in two laboratories; the Laboratory for the Study of Metastatic Microenvironments in the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center’s Translational Research Program and the Beronja Lab in the Hutch’s Human Biology Division. This is a unique opportunity to drive a technically rigorous, cutting-edge project aimed at advancing work to develop high-fidelity models of cancer immunotherapy.

We are looking for a dynamic, bright, meticulous, and highly motivated individual with strong interest in immunology, microsurgery, and pre-clinical work. You will be responsible for performing standard and investigative laboratory work to support our research programs. This will include working with murine models to conduct ultrasound-guided procedures, and conducting highly organized pre-clinical experiments with a number of experimental endpoints.

Responsibilities
The successful candidate will work jointly under two Principal Investigators. The individual will use discretion and judgment in carrying out the following job duties:
Perform ultrasound-guided microsurgeries
Prepare and monitor animals during and after surgeries (including weekends), and over the course of in vivo imaging sessions
Become adept at a number of different tumor models, and conduct pre-clinical experiments to test therapeutics
Breed a number of transgenic strains, genotype offspring and take meticulous note of resulting genotypes/phenotypes
Generate expression plasmids and produce lentivirus
Conduct literature reviews, data analyses and presentation
Perform other duties as required

Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in the biological sciences and at least one-year experience in basic laboratory skills is required. Specialization in immunology is a plus. Independent research experience outside of laboratory course work is strongly desired. The ideal candidate will be meticulous, self-driven, enthusiastic, extremely well-organized, and excited to learn and conduct new surgical techniques.
