Program Assistant - Nature

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is the nation's most effective environmental action organization. We use law, science and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all living things. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our staff helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act, and many of the implementing regulations; our water enforcement cases played a major role shaping current water policy throughout the country. Today, our staff of more than 500 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy and communications experts, and others, work out of offices in New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Bozeman, Montana, and Beijing.
Position Summary:
NRDC is seeking a Program Assistant to work with the Nature Program in our Northern Rockies office located in Bozeman, Montana. The Program Assistant will support our team with their work to advocate for strong wildlife, climate, and energy policies in the Northern Rockies. The successful candidate must have excellent communication and problem-solving skills and be able to handle the following tasks: budget management and tracking, contract management and expense processing, tabling at public events and other outreach as needed, working with external consultants and partners, writing and proofreading documents, coordinating and booking travel, planning meetings and events, and researching and preparing written materials. Interest in regional environmental policy preferred. This position is located in Bozeman, MT and reports to the Northern Rockies Director in Bozeman.


Program and Office Administration: 40%
  • Provide administrative support for Nature Program staff;
  • Coordinate with the Facilities Team to ensure general management and efficient operations of the Northern Rockies office in line with NRDC’s commitment to maintaining environmentally sustainable business operations, including managing vendor relationships and ordering office supplies;
  • Process and track invoices, contracts, grant spending, and other expenses in a timely and organized manner;
  • Support and coordinate the team’s logistical and travel needs at internal or external events;
  • Manage the calendars of several individual professionals;
  • Manage onboarding for new employees and interns in cooperation with human resources, facilities, and information technology staff; and
  • Other duties as assigned.
Program Support: 60%
  • Respond to inquiries from the public and outside organizations;
  • Research topics as needed with a focus on wildlife, climate, and energy issues in the Northern Rockies;
  • Write, edit, and proofread policy documents, external correspondence, reports and other written materials;
  • Facilitate, coordinate, and support follow-ups to internal or external meetings;
  • Support the Northern Rockies staff to advance priority issues;
  • Execute special projects as they arise;
  • Plan various events (both public events and internal meetings and retreats); and
  • Other duties as assigned.
Note: percentages are best estimates and will fluctuate by week and month.


The ideal candidate will have the personal and professional skills to advance NRDC’s objectives, including:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience;
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple projects, and perform well under deadlines;
  • Willingness to do administrative work;
  • Desire to do program work (wildlife, climate, energy, and water);

  • Willingness to be available for occasional overtime work;
  • Full-time professional or related experience working with an advocacy organization, non-profit, or equivalent entity is preferred; and
  • GIS knowledge a plus but not required.
