Data Science Applications Spring Internship

Position Description: 
The world of argumentation and debate is as scientifically fascinating as it is intrinsically important to public affairs. By applying technologies and methods from philosophy, statistics, data science, argumentation theory, and even art to the debate about climate change, students will have an incredible opportunity to contribute meaningfully not only to this public debate, but also to their CV.

Students will be responsible for researching and processing data for our Great American Debate Program. They will be trained to source data pertinent to the project they are assigned and trained to process and work with large data sets that will be provided to them. Through this internship, they will gain valuable hands-on experience dealing with structured and unstructured data sets, made accessible to them to derive interesting insights and therefore make sincere contributions to their project assignments. 

Basic Requirements
We have internship opportunities for students to learn and contribute to this project if they possess these basic proficiencies:
  • Access to adequate technology to complete the tasks (a dedicated computer - either personally or at the library/other shared space)
  • Ability to participate in virtual meetings on a weekly basis
  • Basic digital literacy skills 
  • Students who have passed philosophical logic courses are preferred but not required
  • Must demonstrate a willingness to take on individual responsibilities as well as work in a group environment
Basic Responsibilities
  • Students will be trained to conduct relevant research, and source and process information retrieved from websites, forums, news, and other online sources.
  • Students will structure/clean data sets and work with large qual/quan data sets related to the argumentation of climate change. Basic data science opportunities will be provided

Intermediate Requirements
We have advanced internship opportunities for students who meet the following:
  • All Basic Requirements listed above plus:
  • Have a basic understanding of statistical programming languages such as R, SAS, or Python
  • Have begun learning about statistical models and methods for data analysis (such as Bayesian, mixed model, regression, etc.)
  • Experience or a willingness to work with IBM analytics tools and other open source tools
  • Must demonstrate a willingness to take on individual responsibilities as well as work in a group environment

Intermediate Responsibilities
  • All basic responsibilities listed above plus:
  • Students will be responsible for working with large structured and unstructured data sets to generate data visualizations from which to derive insights and enable discoveries of argumentation trends within the climate change debate
  • Students will pitch weighted argumentation frameworks based on statistical insights and classical logical research to generate a debate value system for the climate change debate


Additional Information
  • 10 - 15 Hours / Week
  • Internship is part time / unpaid
  • Students are encouraged to contact their University/College to pursue this as a for-credit opportunity.
  • Students will learn to work and function as part of a remote/distributed work group from leaders experienced in directing teams both nationally and internationally. While this will allow for a level of flexibility and freedom, students will be expected to operate with a high level of integrity, communication and performance. This will include participation in weekly call meetings, and meeting deadlines.
