Job Description:
The Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ Missouri Geological Survey is seeking a
geologist to work in the Subsurface Investigations and Waste Management Unit in the
Environmental Geology Section of the Geological Survey Program. The successful candidate will
perform office and fieldwork, digital mapping, data collection, data analysis and interpretation,
and technical/scientific reporting. Knowledge of principles and administration of
environmental geology and water resources is highly desirable.
The successful candidate must have, at a minimum, a bachelor’s degree in geology, or closely
related field including coursework required by the Missouri Board of Geologist Registration.
Experience related to environmental geology or geophysics is desired, but not required. The
candidate is expected to have excellent verbal and written communication skills, a strong work
ethic, and the ability to thrive on a team.
Job Duties:
 Perform office work, fieldwork, data collection, data analysis and interpretation related
to environmentally contaminated facilities and sites around the state.
 Perform review of geologic and hydrogeologic technical reports for accuracy and
communicate findings with management and other entities in either written or verbal
form.
 Conduct fieldwork related to the collection of geologic and hydrologic data.
 Arrange property access to ensure adequate site data collection, as necessary.
 Document site-specific conditions and relay data into files, databases, and onto ArcGIS
software.
 Required to know or be capable of learning how to use common office, computer, field,
and laboratory tools and equipment involved in geologic sciences.
 Must be able to communicate effectively with other project managers and with entities
outside of the department.
Other limited duties may include:
 Answer inquiries and provide assistance involving environmentally contaminated sites
or related to the application of environmental regulations.
 Support functions of the Environmental Geology Section by being willing to accept or
volunteer for other opportunities as they arise.
 Conduct presentations related to environmental geology in Missouri.
 Perform site investigations and respond to inquiries.
 Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills:
 Experience related to the environmental geology industry.
 Experience working with ArcGIS or similar geospatial software.
 Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
 Excellent writing skills.
 Experience managing data and database operations.
 Job classification will be commensurate with experience.
 Be or be able to become a Registered Geologist with the State of Missouri.
Qualifications:
 Bachelor’s degree in geology, or closely related field including coursework required by
the Missouri Board of Geologist Registration.
 Possess a valid driver’s license.
 Must be a US citizen or authorized to work in the US.
 Ability to work in an office setting with exposure to computer monitors.
 Regular work schedule is Monday through Friday. Occasional work on weekends and
holidays as necessary to perform and complete assigned duties.
 In-state day and overnight travel is required to perform and complete assigned duties.
Occasional out-of-state travel is required.
 Capable of working alone in remote areas, walking long distances in hilly and rugged
terrain, climbing steep slopes, carrying equipment into and out of the field, shoveling,
and hammering.
 Outdoor work may be required under inclement and uncomfortable weather conditions.
 Ability to lift 50 pounds and be able to stay on ones feet for extended periods of time
