Think Iowa City Internship

Think Iowa City is looking for well qualified candidates to join our team starting spring semester 2020. These internships will combine marketing, sales and special events experiences to achieve the goals of Think Iowa City. The Think Iowa City interns will be valuable members of the team, with the opportunity to contribute to a variety of daily projects. The internships will be a one year commitment beginning in January 2020.

Think Iowa City executes one signature event each year, FRYfest. In addition to FRYfest, interns will help to execute the inaugural Think Iowa City Restaurant Week/Foodie Festival and have the opportunity to participate in the planning of the 2020 Jingle Cross/UCI World Cup Cyclocross Festival. There is potential that two to three additional events will be added in 2020.

In addition to events, Think Iowa City interns will be tasked with assisting the sales, marketing, and servicing teams. These responsibilities of the internships will include, but are not limited to:

Sales
  • Prospecting 
  • Enter and update client information in the CRM 
  • Contributing to the content of and assembling bid packets 
  • Participate in Site Tours 
  • Promote the Iowa City/Coralville area for future conferences 
  • Servicing Groups 
  • Other sales related duties as assigned

Marketing
  • Contribute, monitor, and assist in planning the day-to-day social media activities across all channels for Think Iowa City.
  • Edit content and suggest changes to the website.
  • Monitor user generated content imagery.
  • Activate and record marketing research and economic impact studies.
  • Amateur level photography and videography.
  • Assist with the content of the annual visitors guide.
  • Other marketing related duties as assigned

Servicing
  • Set up/tear down Think Iowa City booth at area conferences and events
  • Assemble welcome packets for conference attendees
  • Assist in managing Think Iowa City servicing inventory
  • Other servicing duties as assigned

Special Events
  • Lead and attend all grass roots marketing opportunities at area events; coordinate volunteers and CVB staff (parades, farmers markets, fairs, etc.)
  • Develop marketing strategies for various special event programming recruitment needs
  • Assist in development of sponsorship fulfillment reports
  • Assist in the planning and execution of FRYfest, Foodie February, Jingle Cross/UCI World Cup Cylocross
  • Develop and execute various operations/programming pieces for each event
  • Attend all related special event committee meetings
  • Assist in the coordination/timeline development of all set-up and tear-down of event(s)
  • Other special event duties as assigned

CVB Internship Expectations & Information:
Expectations
  • Positive attitude and high energy. Reliable, honest and trustworthy. Work as a team player.
  • A creative spirit. Feel free to share any/all ideas and concerns with the Vice President of Special Events and other staff members as appropriate.
  • Attend event in its entirety.
  • Hold ‘safety’ as the number one priority at event.
  • Practice kindness and respect with all CVB staff members, Board members, city officials, vendors, sponsors, and public.
  • Proficient in the use of Internet and Microsoft Office Suite. 
  • Detail-oriented and thorough. Before anything goes out of the office, run it past the Vice President of Special Events.
  • Comply with organizational policies:
  • Attendance: notify Vice President of Special Events, in advance, of planned or anticipated absences from work.
  • Dress Code: be well-groomed and appropriately dressed for the office, and on site at events. A neat appearance is expected.
  • Smoking and Alcohol: smoking and the consumption of alcohol are not permitted on the premises, in company vehicles, or during work hours or at events.
  • Attend promotional events throughout the summer – Coralville 4thFest, North Liberty Blues and BBQ, and Johnson County Fair, etc.

Supervision & Chain of Command
  • Supervision Received: perform work under the direction of the Vice President of Special Events
 
Work Schedule & Pay
  • Internship will be unpaid during spring/fall semesters (eligible for school credit upon request), $11/hour June - August
  • 10 hours/week (in semester); 25 hours/week (May-September)
 
Physical & Environmental Requirements
  • Physical requirements include sitting or standing for long periods of time. Occasionally must lift, carry or push objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Environmental requirements include working indoors and outdoors with varying weather.
