Staff Accountant I, II or Senior

This important role will directly support the Sr. Corporate Accounting Manager and the Corporate Accounting Manager in the accounting operations. Perform and/or create accuracy and compliance testing. Perform routine and special projects for operations and management and support functions including accounting analyses, preparation of reports and interpretation of accounting results, account reconciliations, and classification and recording of accounting transactions.
SALARY RANGE:   (Determined by the knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant.)
  • Level I: $43,000 - $56,000
  • Level II: $52,000 - $67,000
  • Senior Level: $61,000 - $80,000

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Perform assigned duties in a professional manner to facilitate the objectives and goals of the company and to enhance the image of the Accounting Department.
  • Assist the Accounting Managers in the development and maintenance of accounting policies and procedures.
  • Be able to apply accounting principles and to learn and become an expert in FERC accounting regulations.
  • Ensure that systems and procedures are in compliance with company policies, acceptable accounting practices, and applicable regulations.
  • Present ideas for improving efficiency of duties to the Accounting Managers.
  • Complete complex accounting analyses and present the results in a clear and concise manner to the Accounting Managers as well as Financial Managers and non-accounting personnel.
  • Respond quickly to data requests for rate cases, internal and external audit, financial reporting, etc. Ensure that information is accurate and presented in a useful and understandable format.
  • Complete the reconciliations of general ledger accounts. Follow up on discrepancies and implement procedures to ensure adequate resolution.
  • Prepare and coordinate the preparation of journal entries and upload and post journal entries to the PeopleSoft system. Document journal entry procedures.  
  • Obtain a strong understanding of the PeopleSoft general ledger system. Identify and communicate any system deficiencies to the Accounting Managers. Perform adequate follow up/work with Accounting Systems team to ensure enhancements or fixes are properly implemented. Provide assistance as needed on any enhancements or upgrades to the systems.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 
QUALIFICATIONS:
Level 1:
  • Bachelor's degree in Business/Accounting, or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • 1-2 years of experience in an accounting related field preferred.
  • Public accounting experience preferred.
  • Auditing experience desired.  
  • CPA certification desired.
Level II:
  • Three (3) plus years of financial and business experience required.
  • Public accounting experience preferred.
  • Audit experience preferred.
  • Prior experience in energy or utility related industry a plus.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting/finance related discipline required.  
  • CPA, MBA, CMA or CIA strongly preferred.
Senior Level:
  • BS in Accounting/Finance related discipline required.
  • Five (5) plus years of accounting/financial experience required.
  • Utility accounting experience strongly preferred.
  • Public accounting experience preferred.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
  • Thorough knowledge of business and accounting methods and procedures including automated accounting systems.  
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • PeopleSoft knowledge is a plus. 
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently.
  • Ability to work accurately and quickly in a fast paced, high compliance environment.
  • Ability to perform accounting duties of an above average difficulty.  
  • Strong interpersonal skills.  
  • Strong oral and written communication skills. 
  • Must have strong computer and analytical skills.  
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of business information.

Must be able to routinely perform this work for an average of 6-8 hours per day and occasional extended hours as necessary. Must be capable of regular, reliable, and timely attendance.
Specific lifting abilities required by this job include: Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or continuously to lift, carry, push, pull or sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
Work environment: Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with moderate noise level. Must be capable of up to 10% travel (e.g. 2 days/month) by automobile (as driver and passenger), commercial airlines, rental vehicles and public transportation and be able to lodge in public facilities. Travel will be necessary to conduct the duties of this job, and the employee must have the ability to drive and have proper licensing.
