Intern, Global Tax

Our comprehensive, 12-week paid internship program gives you the opportunity to test your skills working for the nation’s leading producer of cleaner fuels and developer of renewable chemicals. This internship will begin May 18, 2020 and end August 7, 2020.


POSITION PURPOSE: 

The purpose of this position is to ensure compliance with company policies and procedures, adherence to federal, state, and local tax laws, and be responsible for and assist with preparing federal, state and local tax returns and related tax research. This position will require the valid application of tax laws and regulations to achieve financial objectives, and will be a member of the Global Tax Department. Key responsibilities include being part of a team that works with the entire tax life cycle, including the opportunity to collaborate and provide support to the business by reviewing and interpreting tax laws / regulations, contributing fresh and innovative ideas in the context of continuous improvement and ensure tax returns are scheduled, prepared, and timely filed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 
Key Accountabilities:
Life Cycle of Tax
• Learn and understand how the company captures data through its internal processes and within technology systems 
• Prepare excise / motor fuel tax returns for various jurisdictions
• Assist on projects and with preparing calculations required for the US income tax return filing
• Accurately prepare workpapers for filed tax returns by collecting, analyzing, and organizing relevant information and research
• Timely file tax returns and make payments in relevant jurisdictions 
• Participate on tax audits, as needed, by assisting with research, gathering of data, preparing documentation, and tracking communications

Business Support
• Conduct basic research of tax laws and apply to proposed and existing business transactions, and prepare memos to document positions as needed
• Analyze fact patterns and logically apply tax law to support positions within tax policies
• Prioritize projects and effectively communicate to stakeholders in accomplishing goals during the internship
• Assist and contribute to internal processes needed to support business objectives and manage tax risk

Continuous Improvement
• Understand and utilize technology to improve efficiencies, accuracy, and manage tax risk 
• Recommend process improvements and/or new technologies that will enhance efficiency and effectiveness

Other Responsibilities:
• Collaborate and contribute to team effort by accomplishing goals and objectives
• Comply with company policies and procedures 
• Assist on special projects and perform other duties as assigned



JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Education Required: Pursuing a bachelor’s degree – Accounting, or related degree 
**Senior or Junior status required
Experience Required: Business environment experience, relevant courses, club participation and internship preferred
Skills Required: 
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Word)
Advanced math and accounting skills 

Special skills or knowledge preferred:
Advanced Excel skills (Pivot table, Macros, Advanced Excel Functions)
