Channel Development Intern

Business Need / Purpose of Role
The Channel Development Intern will be responsible for learning and participating in managing a regulatory program including, pipeline licenses, marine construction permits, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) permits, seismic exploration, and rights of entry on Port Authority property.  This internship is designed to be both educational and practical.  In this position, the intern will learn how to take skills he/she may have acquired in school related to his/her areas of interest, and apply them in a professional setting. The candidate will also have opportunities to network within the program in other areas of interest.

Objectives & Measurement - Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in managing projects related to the regulation (licenses/permits) of Port Authority property along the Houston Ship Channel, including submerged lands
  • Participate in executing requests for licenses and permits issued by the Port Authority from the Port Commission
  • Assist with leasing submerged lands for barge fleeting
  • Assist with field inspections (i.e. pipeline installations, dock construction, dredging operations, etc.), as required
  • Participate in managing policies and practices regarding effective and expanded use of assets
  • Assist, manage, and coordinate Port Authority owned dredged material placement areas for private terminals
  • Assist coordinating contracts for navigation studies, general support, constructions design and management, testing, and program development
  • Assist in preparing various presentations to internal departments and external organizations
  • Assist in preparing official record correspondence to applicants, external partners, and other Port Authority departments
  • Participate in and take minutes of inter-agency meetings

Job Knowledge / Education and Qualifications
Eligibility Requirements:     
  • Students must be currently enrolled in and have already completed two semesters in an undergraduate or graduate degree program:
  • 2021/2022 graduation status preferred (junior/senior level)
  • May 2020 graduates are not eligible, unless already accepted into a graduate program to begin studies Fall 2020
  • Students must either attend a Houston area college/university or have residence within a commutable distance
  • Students  must be in good academic standing to apply for an internship; a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 is preferred
  • Students may not be related to any current Port Houston employee
  • Students must be able to work throughout the established twelve-week (12) program dates

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  
  • Demonstrate strong organizational and analytical skills;
  • Demonstrate attention to detail;
  • Ability to multi-task;
  • Strong reading and comprehension verbal and written communication skills, including ability to listen to staff and understand their expectations and requirements;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook;
  • Willingness to learn quickly;
  • Punctuality is key;
  • Ability to interact on a professional level
