Environmental Affairs Intern

Business Need / Purpose of Role
The Environmental Affairs Intern will be responsible for learning and participating in a variety of tasks in broad-spectrum areas of environmental health & safety for large enterprises to help manage environmental, health & safety, and quality systems. This internship is designed to be both educational and practical.  In this position, the intern will learn how to take skills he/she may have acquired in school related to his/her areas of interest, and apply them in a professional setting. The candidate will also have opportunities to network within the program in other areas of interest.

Objectives & Measurement - Key Responsibilities:
  • Create tools required for managing permitting activities and compliance measures associated with a project from concept to completion
  • Assist the team in executing a plan to effectively organize pre and post operation/maintenance and/or construction activities on all projects requiring monitoring and/or permitting close out
  • Participate in the planning process and identifies regulatory requirements needed for the successful completion of projects
  • Utilize Environmental background, such as Environmental Science and Environmental Engineering, to ensure air compliance and water treatment
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Job Knowledge / Education and Qualifications
Eligibility Requirements:    
  • Students must be currently enrolled in and have already completed two semesters in an undergraduate or graduate degree program:
  • 2021/2022 graduation status preferred (junior/senior level)
  • May 2020 graduates are not eligible, unless already accepted into a graduate program to begin studies Fall 2020
  • Students must either attend a Houston area college/university or have residence within a commutable distance
  • Students must be in good academic standing to apply for an internship; a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 is preferred
  • Students may not be related to any current Port Houston employee
  • Students must be able to work throughout the established twelve-week (12) program dates

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  
  • Demonstrates strong organizational and analytical skills;
  • Demonstrates attention to detail;
  • Ability to multi-task;
  • Ability to prepare business cases and explain and/or support the recommended course of action;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including ability to listen to business partners and understand their expectations and requirements;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook;
  • Willingness to learn;
  • Punctuality is key
