Legal Intern: Advocacy Dept/Immigration - Spring 2020

The National Political Advocacy Department of the ACLU’s National Office in Washington, DC has an opening for a Spring Legal Internship with the Equality Division - Immigration Team starting in January 2020. The intern will provide research support for campaigns and advocacy on immigration issues related to state and local entanglement with ICE as well as issues impacting Muslim, Arab, Middle Eastern, and South Asian communities including and beyond immigration.
INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW
The Spring 2020 Legal Internship requires a part-time 15-20 hours per week commitment. A stipend is available for those students who do not receive outside funding and/or course credit. Arrangements can be made with educational institutions for work/study or course credit.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Interns will gain valuable experience by working with the Immigration team on a wide variety of issues. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Provide research support for campaigns and advocacy on cutting-edge immigration, national security/counterterrorism, hate crimes, and limited free speech issues
- Aid with the creation of resources for affiliates
- Special projects as needed
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
This internship is open to law students who will have completed their first year of school before the internship commences. Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to the mission of the ACLU. Applicants should possess:
- Excellent research, writing and communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, and conducting internet research
- The initiative to see projects through to completion
- Ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced working environment
- The ideal candidates are independent, detail-oriented, and highly organized
- A commitment to civil liberties, civil rights and social justice
- Experience on a law review or journal preferred but not required
- Experience in an immigration law clinic or human rights clinic preferred but not required
- Experience with immigration law preferred but not required
