Naturalists teach outdoor, cultural history and nature-themed activities to people of all ages, including campers, family members (pre-school to grandparents) and youth groups. Some naturalist positions specialize in teaching at the organic farm, traditional skills and crafts, partnering with local resorts or parks and working with specialty camps.

JOB DESCRIPTION
  • Serve as role model for students and peers: display maturity, responsibility, flexibility, enthusiasm, and sound judgment
  • Teach Wolf Ridge summer program classes to diverse audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Expectation is that class is of high quality that may require preparation time. Summer programs include Wolf Ridge Summer Youth Program, Road Scholars, Family Camp, visiting summer school programs, and Wilderness Trips
  • Teach/work 10-14 periods per week. A period may include 3-hour long daytime classes, van driving, evening naturalist presentations, 1.5- hour-long evening activities, and astronomy
  • Possibilities for specialization are available in traditional skill and crafts, farm education and specialty camps such as survival camp, rock climbing camp and more.
  • Other projects may be substituted for teaching when necessary to fill out the workweek
  • Participate in staff training and orientation
  • Be flexible to accommodate the needs of different programs
  • Understand and adhere to all Wolf Ridge policies

QUALIFICATIONS
Naturalists at Wolf Ridge are resilient, take initiative, selfless, creative, high-energy, fun, nurturing, compassionate, and display a positive attitude. They care about children and want to share a passion for our environment with each of them. A naturalist job is can be challenging – think 12 hour days, 5 – 6 days a week – but naturalists are ready to work hard to meet those challenges. They’re also great role models, display that sense of selflessness and always put the campers first. Most of all, naturalists are always focused on ensuring that the participants and staff have an amazing and memorable experience at Wolf Ridge. The naturalist should;
  • Must be 21 years of age or older at time of employment
  • Possess a current CPR/AED and First Aiid certifications
  • A willingness to become wilderness water safety certified upon arrival
  • Working towards a Bachelors degree at an accredited college or university
  • At least two (2) years or equivalent of experience teaching environmental and/or outdoor education
  • Familiar with the Residential Environmental Education Center and/or Overnight Environmental Education Camp model and the responsibilities therein
  • Responsible, detail oriented and hard-working
  • Friendly, happy, with a good sense of humor. Take the initiative to see problems, find solutions, and make recommendations as it relates to your area of responsibility
