Role purpose
The purpose of this role is to introduce the intern to Trialing and Seed Production Operations. Gain experience by taking responsibility of selected field production operations in support of producing a supply of high quality seed and data. The intern will take on several roles based upon seed production practices and yield trial data
Accountabilities
  • Functioning as an integral member of a team responsible for producing, packaging, and organizing physical seed. While also supporting planting, notetaking, harvesting of Yield Trials and seed production breeding nurseries.
  • Provide the intern the opportunity of being exposed to Operation and Trialing activities, allowing them to apply academic background and assist in the department activities from trial design, preparation, maintenance, harvesting, lab tasks, and data analysis
  • Supporting efforts to maintain integrity of seed inventory, packaging, field layout, pollinating and data collection.
  • Perform hand pollinations and aid in supervising seasonal labor during pollination
  • Performing phenotypic evaluations prior to, during and after pollination 
  • Effectively communicating regularly with peers and supervisors regarding the status of projects and work   activities.
  • Performing all tasks and behaving in a manner compliant with and in support of all safety and stewardship related company policies and practices, including completing all required company training courses.

 



Qualifications


Knowledge, experience & capabilities
  • Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must be pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, Ag Business, or another closely related agricultural field of study
  • Understand and use of modern agronomic practices.
Critical knowledge
  • Ability to use MS Office, especially Word, Excel, Power Point and other standard office software.
  • Innovative - To always look to implement new procedures or technologies to improve work efficiencies
  • Communication-The ability to communicate information well (both written and spoken) is highly desired
  • Detail Oriented-All procedures and policies must be understood and followed
 Additional information
  • A minimum of two years in current position is (required for internal)
  • All applicants must be eligible to work in the US.
WORKING CONDITIONS / PHYSICAL DEMANDS
PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 
Capable of working in high or low temperature conditions in field or greenhouse. Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds. Capable of working long hours during time-critical periods of the growing season.
 
WORKING CONDITIONS WHILE PERFORMING ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Field, greenhouse, laboratory, office. Domestic and international travel required with occasional overnight stays. Stays at off-season production/nursery locations may extend to two to three weeks. Potential allergens¾pollen, fungal spores, chemical pesticides in the field or greenhouse.
 
TRAVEL:
Seasonal travel to off-station testing locations, project meetings, and winter nursery locations
