Data Scientist

The role of the Data Scientist is to develop algorithms and machine learning models to create breakthrough solutions for complex problems. The successful candidate will have deep knowledge of the analytics spectrum – Descriptive, Diagnostic, Prescriptive, and Predictive Analytics – and demonstrate the ability to implement analytic solutions at Pella Corporation.  This person will provide professional/technical growth to their department, while leading both the strategic & tactical deployment of key analytics projects. In addition to contribution within the Data Analytics & Insights team, this role will also support the team leadership in its effort to evolve and amplify Pella’s analytics and insights capabilities.
 
The Data Scientist will have no direct reports. The successful candidate will be expected to actively participate in defining and governing the analytics strategy for Pella Corporation as well as lead the technical execution for data science projects as we build our capabilities.
 
A successful candidate for this position should be an experienced, data science leader willing to guide team members through the change that will be needed to evolve and amplify Pella’s analytic capabilities. This candidate must be comfortable embracing uncertainty and ambiguity, while still driving results with the available data and architecture. The successful candidate will possess a strong statistical analytics background as an individual contributor. This position requires a deep understanding of core analytics, methodologies, and tools, as well as have a working knowledge of related financial, mathematics and statistic disciplines. Exceptional communication, prioritization and project management skills will be critical.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Partners with multiple areas of the organization to generate rich insights for our internal partners, leveraging analytics and data expertise. This includes leading the development of key metrics, results and analysis driving the best methods, standards, and automation for efficiency.
  • Provide advanced analysis, and in-depth analytics using a variety of information sources, tools, and analytical techniques. This will include defining the issue to analyze, scope the effort, identify the best techniques and data sources needed to successfully complete the activity.
  • Will assist in growing the skill base of the analytics team while simultaneously keeping informed on analytic trends and how emerging and modern techniques could best benefit Pella Corporation. Willingness to coach and develop junior team members and assist with advancing their analytic skills.
  • Project management, presentations to management up to the Executive level, and vendor management as needed per agreed upon priorities and deliverables. Ability to clearly and concisely simplify and communicate complex concepts, findings, and implications to all levels of the organization (e.g. junior marketing managers, agency and distribution partners, C-level, etc.)
  • Documents methodologies when using advanced data science tools and recommends appropriate intervals to review and validate machine learning and other advanced algorithms to monitor performance. Strong understanding of ethical & moral impacts of advanced analytical techniques and hidden biases found in datasets.
  • Leads the development of data modeling, mining, pattern analysis, data visualization and machine learning solutions to address customer needs.
  • Guide the organization in its selection and adoption of advanced analytics tools, techniques, frameworks, and processes.
  • Ability to direct and partner with IT to continuously improve data management and analytics infrastructures
  • Collaborate with other functional business teams to understand requirements and devise possible solutions.

DATA AND ANALYTICS: An expert level of understanding of fundamental and advanced analytics theory, methodologies and tools. This may be achieved through a combination of applied education and practical experience. Must be able to compile and analyze large and varied sources and determine relevant insights.
 
COMMUNICATION: Must demonstrate success as an influential, collaborative communicator – with peers, managers, internal customers and company leaders. Must be able to communicate insights gained through analysis to business leaders in a way that is straightforward and provides a clear understanding of the insight(s). Must be able to identify, simplify and communicate complex concepts, findings and implications to all levels of the organization to support data-driven decision making.
 
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This job does not have any supervisory responsibilities at this time but may in the future. Candidates should have the long-term potential to manage personnel. May also include management of third-party consulting and software vendors. Role will carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.


QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Master’s degree in analytics, statistics, mathematics or computer science (Ph.D. preferred). Cross functional experience is preferred.
  • 7+ years’ practical experience with SAS, ETL, data processing, database programming and data analytics
  • Extensive background in data mining and statistical analysis
  • Ability to understand various data structures and common methods in data transformation
  • Excellent pattern recognition and predictive modeling skills
  • Experience with programming languages such as R, Python, SAS, Matlab, SQL, Java etc.
  • Experience with Machine Learning, Neural Networks, Natural Language Processing, Image analytics

COMPUTER SKILLS
Expert-level skills in foundational analytics platforms required. Skills in advanced analytics, statistics and/or data warehouse tools a plus. Aptitude in Microsoft Office suite, with strength and effective communication of information skills in Excel and PowerPoint. Understanding of data warehouse solutions, databases, and analytic/statistics packages a plus (Oracle Answers, Power BI, Minitab, R, Python, GitHub).
