Mechanical Methods & Analysis Intern

TITLE:                   Mechanical Methods & Analysis Intern
LOCATION:          Bellevue, WA, USA

TerraPower® is a nuclear energy technology company based in Bellevue, Washington. At our core, we are working to raise living standards globally. The essential factor? Energy. In 2006, Bill Gates and a group of like-minded visionaries decided that the private sector needed to take action. They believed that business interests could develop a scalable, sustainable, low-carbon and cost-competitive energy source that would allow all nations to quicken their pace of economic development and reduce poverty. TerraPower’s goal is to provide the world with a more affordable, secure and environmentally friendly form of nuclear energy.

TerraPower, LLC was established to bring together the strengths and experience of the world’s public and private nuclear energy sectors to develop a new generation of nuclear reactors that would responsibly meet growing energy needs around the globe. Its approach addresses the traditional shortcomings of nuclear power, in terms of safety, cost effectiveness, environmental soundness, and resistance to weapons proliferation.

TerraPower is seeking to hire highly motivated and forward thinking professionals who are interested in focusing on advanced nuclear reactor research and development, and influencing change within the nuclear power landscape. TerraPower is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We do not discriminate in hiring on the basis of sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, color, religious creed, national origin, physical or mental disability, protected Veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state, or local law. In addition, as a federal contractor, TerraPower has instituted an Affirmative Action Plan (AAP) in an effort to proactively recruit, hire, and promote women, minorities, disabled persons and veterans.

Reactor Core Mechanical Design Analysis Intern
TerraPower, LLC is seeking a highly motivated engineering intern with a good understanding of the finite element method (FEM), solid mechanics and mechanics of materials, experience with object oriented programming (Python preferred) and a passion for advanced reactor core design and analysis.
The TerraPower, LLC in house suite of analysis automation tools, named the Core Mechanical Framework (CMF) is a Python based software which makes frequent use of the FEM theory as well as closed-form solutions for high-resolution mechanical analyses of sodium fast reactor cores to assess their performance and aid design efforts. The CMF is an integral part of the TerraPower, LLC’s Advanced Reactor Modelling Interface (ARMI) software enabling multi-physics analysis. The CMF is constantly under development in order to add new capabilities, improve performance, and carrying out validation and verification activities.
The intern will join a fast-paced, very friendly small team of highly motivated and experienced engineers, and will support the CMF development efforts. The work will consist of:
  • Analysis method development: independent work and study to develop and test core mechanical analysis methodologies.
  • Improve and implement existing analysis methodologies into the CMF.
  • Perform analyses and sensitivity studies using the CMF and its methodologies.
  • V&V of the CMF by comparing analytical predictions with empirical evidence.

Responsibilities
  • The intern will be assigned one or more projects.
  • The intern is expected to learn the analysis framework and to develop tools within the existing architecture.
  • The intern should be comfortable with independent problem solving while collaborating with the rest of the core mechanical team.
