Preserve Assistant, Summer Block Island Program

Become a force for nature and a healthy planet by joining the Block Island team! The work of this position will help to protect and preserve Block Island’s critical habitats. This is a full-time seasonal position from June 1 – August 28, 2020.
 
We are looking for a Preserve Assistant to join the Block Island team this Summer. This position works closely with the Block Island staff maintains preserve areas on Block Island frequented by the visiting public and performs trail management activities.  The candidate will assist with the tasks associated with biological and property monitoring, habitat restoration, maintaining trails, mowing, trimming, trash pick-up, posting signage, interacting with visitors, and invasive species removal. The ideal candidate will have a background and track record that includes:
 
Minimum Qualifications
• High school diploma or GED and 6 months of related experience             
• Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. lawn mower, chainsaw, brush blade, weed wacker, or similar equipment).
• Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR).

Preferred Qualifications
• Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
• Ability to deal with the general public in a friendly, outgoing and professional manner.
• Basic carpentry/mechanical skills preferred.
• Ability to recognize plant and animal species as required to complete preserve management preferred.
• Ability to obtain a driver’s license and maintain a good driving record. Experience driving pickup trucks.
