Marine Program Assistant, Block Island Program

Become a force for nature and a healthy planet by joining the Block Island team this summer! The work of this position will help to protect and preserve Block Island’s Great Salt Pond and educate residents and visitors on its importance. This is a seasonal position, starting June 1 through August 28, 2020 with an opportunity to extend through September, housing may be available.
 
We are looking for Marine Program Assistant with strong leadership and communication skills to assist the Block Island Marine Program with scientific activities involving multi-gear fisheries surveys, water quality monitoring, salt marsh monitoring; leading summer nature walks and other stewardship activities.  This position works closely with the Block Island staff and will provide vital assistance to ensure this collective body of work is done effectively and efficiently. We appreciate collaborative approaches and encourage innovative ideas and recommendations. The ideal candidate will have a background and track record that includes:

Minimum Qualifications
• High school diploma or GED and 6 months of related experience.            
• Experience operating various types of scientific equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
• Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required (e.g. First Aid, CPR).
• Experience working and communicating with a wide range of people.
• Experience with scientific research and data entry.                       

Preferred Qualifications
• Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
• Enrolled in an undergraduate program, or a recent graduate of Biology, Conservation, Environmental Studies, Marine, Ichthyology or related field.
• Training of New England fish and ecosystems.
• Boating experience.
• Proven ability to deal with the general public in a friendly, outgoing & professional manner.
• Knowledge of Block Island community preferred.
