Summer Internship –Rocky Mountain National Park, East side (Estes Park, CO))
Do you enjoy interacting with park visitors and assisting them in understanding and appreciating the park’s natural and cultural resources while living and working in a beautiful mountain setting? As an interpretive intern you would gain experience in presenting thematic interpretative programs, operating visitor centers, and gain knowledge on a variety of topics including wildlife, biology, botany, forest ecology, geology, and history and park management.
Area Information:
Rocky Mountain National Park is located 70 miles northwest of Denver and consists of 415 square miles of high mountain scenery carved and sculpted by glaciers. Wildlife includes elk, bighorn sheep, coyotes, mountain lions, marmots, pikas, black bears and a variety of birds. Trail Ridge Road provides access to the alpine tundra while connecting the east and west sides of the park. Qualifications:
Rocky Mountain National Park seeks college students or recent graduates of exceptional ability with a background in natural or physical sciences, history, communication, education, natural science interpretation, recreation and resources management or a related field.
In addition to public speaking skills, the ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of audiences, and working as a team with park staff and the public are essential skills. Must possess a valid driver’s license and ability to drive a government vehicle. Must have the ability to work on uneven terrain above 8,000 feet and be a U.S. Citizen.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties include preparing and facilitating up to four interpretive natural or cultural history programs by the end of the season to a variety of diverse audiences, answering questions at park visitor centers and communicating current park issues in a professional manner to the public.
Additional duties include separate projects related to social media and additional projects as assigned. Interns must have the ability to work as part of a team with park volunteers, seasonal and permanent staff, including communicating well with supervisors.
Dates of Service:
May 26 through August 15. Commitment is forty hours per week including weekends and holidays. Stipend is $240/week plus housing. An initial orientation and training period is provided, followed by on-going mentoring.
