We’re looking for designers who bring new knowledge, innovative thinking and a passion to improve the healthcare experience. Healthcare is in a period of incredible transformation. With shifting pressures, new technologies and start-up disruptors popping up left and right we are at a time of changing consumer expectations. Kaiser Permanente Orange County is looking for Service Design Interns to join the team this coming summer to dig deep into the complexity of healthcare systems to simplify and enhance the experience.
 
Who we are
Our team's focus is with the 24/7 departments (Imaging, Laboratory, Emergency Department and Respiratory Therapy) within the Orange County service area. We work to better understand how to improve and deliver seamless coordinated care to all who interact with these services. 
 
What we do
Working in the frontline of healthcare operations we are involved in all steps of the process, from experience design research to implementation. Our team collaborates with the service line experts across 2 large hospitals and 17 clinics throughout Orange County. We question the status quo to create positive change in how people experience their care. Join the team and be a change agent and help KP deliver simple, seamless, and personalized care. 
 
Who we are looking for 
We are building out a design team within the Kaiser Permanente Orange County service area, with a clear focus to understand and improve consumer experiences using design as a strategic tool. We are looking for compassionate service designers to join us for the summer to make a sustainable impact as we tackle big systemic issues around coordinated care. 

These individuals will lie at the intersection of research, communication design and strategy. The ideal candidate is comfortable with ambiguity, is forward thinking, and enthusiastic for systems thinking. 
Communication design is key in translating research insights into compelling visual models, stories, and other artifacts, that help structure information. Designers have the ability to tell stories in a manner that’s provokes empathy thereby creating advocates in the system for members and care teams. 
 
Requirements
• Comfortable working within a large organization and engaging stakeholders
• Understand and lead the design process (Research, Analysis, Concept Development, Strategic Planning, and Prototyping)
• Comfortable leading/participating in patient/stakeholder interviews, which may include designing visual tools for probing activities
• Experience translating qualitative, quantitative, and secondary research into insights and strong visual forms (models/diagrams, narratives, immersive experiences)
• A mindful individual who is emotionally intelligent when interacting with others
• Ability to present work to executives: strong written, visual, and oral communication skills
• Fluent with visualization tools like Adobe Suite, Sketch, and Microsoft Office Suites
• Portfolio required

Working Days: Mon-Fri 8:00 AM-5:00 PM | Travel: Yes, up to 40-70% of the time
