2020 Fisheries Ecology Lab Internship

Job Details:

The DISL/USA Fisheries Ecology Lab conducts research on a wide range of marine fish species from Red Drum to Red Snapper in a variety of locations from the Mobile River Delta to offshore waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Research projects conducted by Dr. Sean Powers and Dr. Bob Shipp, their graduate students, and research associates are designed to (1) quantify the relationship between marine fish species and associated habitats and (2) study the ecology of coastal/estuarine fishes and benthic invertebrates, particularly those that support commercial and recreational fisheries.

In the Fisheries Ecology Lab, we perform experiments and field surveys to detect and quantify the effects of local fisheries on species composition, abundance, and life history characteristics (it is important to note that fish are sacrificed in order to assess these metrics). From a marine resources management perspective, information on these effects is critical for the conservation and restoration of marine finfish and shellfish populations. The ultimate goal of the Fisheries Ecology Lab is to provide scientifically sound information to direct conservation and restoration efforts of marine fisheries and the habitats that these species rely upon.

Stipend: $400/wk
