Perfusionist | Cardiovascular Institute

Job Summary

Performs extra-corporeal circulation, using heart-lung machines, during various cardiac surgeries to allow cardiac surgeons to focus on performing procedures. Performs cardio-pulmonary perfusions in various cardiac surgeries to ensure patients' circulatory and respiratory needs are met. Operates heart-lung machines and other relevant equipment for cardio-pulmonary perfusion. Monitors, calibrates and maintains devices according to relevant standards. Monitors a spectrum of physiologic parameters and copes with emergency situations during cardio-pulmonary perfusion procedures. Adheres to quality assurance policies and procedures to ensure accurate and safe practices in cardiopulmonary perfusion. Operation of blood salvage. Sets up and primes pumps for on-bypass procedures and cell savers. Calibrates instrumentation for on-bypass.

In addition, the clinical perfusionist often functions in supportive roles for other medical specialties. Including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) to assist in long-term support of patients outside of the operation room environment. Ability to provide perfusion and perfusion related services to a variety of surgical patients. Ability to communicate with patients, family members and others on health care team. Ability to solve problems. Ability to document clearly and communicate in writing. Ability to perform and evaluate laboratory tests. Ability to manage fluids, blood, and electrolyte therapy. Ability to monitor and support patients using current perfusion techniques. Ability to work with growth and develop needs of all client populations. Maintains patient perfusion needs. Ability and willingness to accommodate on-call rotations and responsibilities. Be competent in the use of Activated Clotting Time (ACT) Machine.

Qualifications
Graduate from an accredited program and board certification within one year of higher through the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion is required.

Certification or board-eligible for certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion is required. Maintain requirements for certification through the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion is required.
