Long Term Substitute (8th Grade Math)

STEM Preparatory Academy is a public charter school that serves over one thousand students in grades 5-12. The STEM Prep student body is made up of a unique, highly diverse population from Southeast Nashville. We have one of the highest percentage of Hispanic and Latino students in the state and serve nearly half of the highest-poverty neighborhoods in Nashville. Roughly 80% of STEM Prep students have been classified as English Learners during their academic career
 
STEM Prep is among the highest performing public middle schools in Tennessee. STEM has been recognized as a Reward School by the state of Tennessee for performing in the top 5% of schools in the state for progress and growth. Since our inception, students have consistently outperformed their peers in both the district and state in every subject area and 100% of our graduating seniors were accepted into college. 

Job Description:
We are currently searching for a confident individual who can serve as a long-term substitute on our team. We are also searching for individuals who can act as flexible, on-call substitutes for our school. If you are a friendly and competent professional with interest in education, then we’re interested in you. Your duties will include assigning homework, managing classroom activities, and compiling reports.

To excel in this role, you should have in-depth knowledge of effective teaching practices that ensure learning is a comfortable and meaningful experience. Our ideal candidate has excellent interpersonal and organizational skill, with strong presence in the classroom. 

Responsibilities:
  • Adhere to the curriculum and lesson plans assigned by the regular teacher.
  • Follow procedures and achieve lesson goals.
  • Assign and explain homework.
  • Oversee students outside of the classroom including in the hallways and cafeteria.
  • Comply with all school regulations and policies at all times.
  • Learn and execute all STEM Prep systems.
  • Take attendance and document daily notes.
  • Ensure classroom and work is kept clean and orderly.
  • Oversee the normal classroom rhythms and activities.
  • Compile a report for the teacher for when he/she returns.
  • Be a strong role model for kids.

Qualifications:
  • You love teaching and have experience working with kids.
  • You are a professional who enjoys helping others and can be flexible in a pinch.
  • You have attended at least some college and understand the importance of higher education.
  • You have good judgement, lots of patience and a great temperament.
  • You have availability to work from 6:45am to 4pm.
  • You love getting feedback and want to grow as a professional.
  • You have a capturing presence and can build relationships authentically with kids.
  • You are positive, polite, and think that every minute counts when it comes to a child’s education.
  • Teaching certification is not required.
  • Bachelor’s degree is preferred
