Science Communication Summer Intern

Milwaukee’s Urban Ecology Center has captured the attention of leaders in cities across the country. Our model of creating neighborhood-based environmental education centers energizes urban public natural areas. The Urban Ecology Center’s facilities and programs have been recognized nationally and internationally for their innovative approach to sustainability, neighborhood-based urban environmental education and community science. 

Position Summary: The goal of this full-time, seasonal position is to develop skills and gain experience in science communication and to become an environmentally responsible mentor in the urban Milwaukee community. You will experience the full scope of the Urban Ecology Center’s department of Research and Community Science Department functioning as an embedded reporter. This intern will write weekly blogs, communicate with volunteers, document Community Science activities through photographs and stories, and assist with reports, programs, projects and general operations as needed. 

Primary Responsibilities
  • Work closely with the Center’s Research and Community Science department to support wildlife research and monitoring efforts in the Milwaukee Rotary Centennial Arboretum, Washington Park and/or the Menomonee Valley. Additional projects may be offsite in and around the Milwaukee area.
  • Work closely with the Center’s Marketing department to help tell stories of the Community Science Department and the Urban Ecology Center through photographs, blogs, short videos and other forms of communication. Potential to help write grants depending on skill level and interest.
  • Gain an understanding of and help share the goals of the Community Science department and the Urban Ecology Center.
  • Facilitate monitoring projects for community volunteers, including but not limited to bird, bat, invertebrate, snake, and mammal surveys. Additional opportunities include water quality monitoring and independent research projects.
  • Work alongside high school students concurrently enrolled in the Urban Ecology Center’s High School Outdoor Leadership Program and students enrolled in the Center’s Young Scientists Program.

Qualifications: High school diploma or GED is required. Working toward or completion of additional learning (certification, associates, undergraduate or graduate degree) in natural sciences, education, writing, marketing or a related area is preferred. Previous experience working with volunteers, marketing skills, and strong communication skills are also preferred. Physical ability with reasonable accommodation is required for various activities, such as working long days outdoors under various weather conditions and carrying equipment – up to 25 pounds.

Internship duration: Monday, June 1st – Friday, August 21st, 2020. This position requires 40 hours per week. Summer interns will be required to take 5 days off, unpaid throughout the summer.

Compensation: $9-$10 per hour

Training: On-site training for all the above is ongoing throughout the internship.

Reports to: Research and Community Science Coordinator
