Passionate about the outdoors and conserving natural resources? Are you interested in joining a workforce of natural resource professionals?  At the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Ecological and Water Resources (EWR) Division, we work to protect and manage our state’s natural resources.  This position is an important part of that mission and exists to direct the conservation of the state’s nongame resources within the Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) Central Region. The nongame specialist will use the MN Wildlife Action Plan to develop and implement conservation actions to protect, maintain, enhance, and restore native nongame wildlife resources for their intrinsic values, ecosystem functions, long-term benefits, and public enjoyment.
Responsibilities include:
  • Evaluate habitat management needs, and direct, implement and monitor actions that will enhance and maintain nongame wildlife species and their associated habitat(s).
  • Design, direct, and implement surveys, studies, special investigations, and research projects independently or in collaboration with others to determine the status, distribution, abundance, and conservation needs of nongame wildlife and the effectiveness of conservation actions.
  • Provide technical guidance related to nongame wildlife so that the needs of those species are adequately addressed. Participate in diverse internal and external teams focused on conserving wildlife and habitats.
  • Review and provide technical guidance on issues and projects with the potential to impact nongame species and their habitats.
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate activities that inform citizens about nongame wildlife species and their habitat needs. 
  • Administer a nongame program within the guidance of the MN Wildlife Action Plan, department strategic plans, departmental policies, regional priorities, and legal mandates.
  • Lead the work of other personnel so that nongame wildlife activities can be implemented in an efficient and effective manner and according to state labor agreements.
